Constitutional Law and Politics: Civil Rights and Civil Liberties. Vol. 2. 5th Ed. New York: Norton, 2003. Since O’Brien is an author too, here’s how to cite one of his articles from the book: O’Brien, David M. “Other Post-Roe Rulings on Abortion.” Constitutional Law and Politics: Civil Rights and Civil Liberties. Vol. 2. 5th ed. Ed. David M. O’Brien. New York: W.W. Norton, 2003. 1244-8. Here’s how to cite just one of the legal cases from our course on its own, with no page #’s. The original legal citation: Roe v. Wade 410 U.S. 113, 93 S. Ct. 705 (1973) The citation in MLA format: Roe v. Wade. No. 113. Supreme Ct. of the US. 11 October 1972. Lastly, since many of your cases are in O’Brien, you’ll need to do a cross-reference: Roe v. Wade. O’Brien. 1230-9. Example: . . . while the historical development of the “right to privacy” has been largely expansive in terms of personal liberty, rather than restrictive, with the notable exception of Lambert v. Wicklund (O’Brien, “Post-Roe”; Lambert). Roe v. Wade held that personal autonomy was not without restriction though. Specifically, Justice Rehnquist condemns this recklessness in defining privacy as, “to be free from unwanted state regulation of consensual transactions” to be blatantly unconstitutional; a sentiment that he echoes in Pennsylvania v. Casey and in Stenberg v. Carhart (Roe 1238; Pennsylvania; Stenberg). Works Cited Lambert v. Wicklund. No. 292. US Supreme Ct. 31 March 1997. O’Brien, David M., ed. Winslow PAGE 2 PAGE \# "'Page: '#' '" Author’s name or editor PAGE \# "'Page: '#' '" Signifies that O’Brien is the editor of the book – ALWAYS IN LOWER CASE AFTER THE NAME ENTRY PAGE \# "'Page: '#' '" Title of the book PAGE \# "'Page: '#' '" This is a multivolume work, so this shows which volume in the series that it is PAGE \# "'Page: '#' '" This is the Fifth edition – note the capitalization of “Ed.” PAGE \# "'Page: '#' '" Place of publication. For major cities (Boston, Los Angeles, or New York, a state abbreviation isn’t required) However, Quincy, MA would, etc. PAGE \# "'Page: '#' '" Abbreviated publisher reference. The full company name here is W.W. Norton & Co., which is easily reduced to “Norton” PAGE \# "'Page: '#' '" Year of publication – note that it matches the year for the volume. Also note that in this case we don’t need page numbers, since we’re citing the work in its entirety. PAGE \# "'Page: '#' '" This one’s different because we’re citing O’Brien as an author, not as the editor of the collection. In this case we omit the “ed” after his name. We want people to know that he wrote the article titled “Other Post-Roe Rulings.” PAGE \# "'Page: '#' '" Titles of articles or book chapters in a larger work are placed in Quotation marks. PAGE \# "'Page: '#' '" Notice how this entry is different from the one above. Since I’ve cited him as an author within the edited book, I would still need to show who the editors are. Since he’s the same guy, his name goes down twice. Still, here the editors are marked by a capital “Ed.” PAGE \# "'Page: '#' '" Note the page numbers here. This is required for articles and book chapters. PAGE \# "'Page: '#' '" BIG ISSUE: In the text of your paper, this citation will always be italicized, but not in the bibliographic entry on the Works Cited page. MLA format nitpicks about this. PAGE \# "'Page: '#' '" This number here is always whatever follows the U.S. Abbreviation in the legal version. PAGE \# "'Page: '#' '" Here’s how to abbreviate the supreme court PAGE \# "'Page: '#' '" This is the date argued or date decided (in the case that it’s not actually argued in court). You can use the legal citation to find the date argued by looking it up on Findlaw or even Google most times. Check the links on our site if you’re unsure. PAGE \# "'Page: '#' '" Trust me, this is the EASIEST POSSIBLE WAY to make notes about the articles online. I checked each and every possible MLA formatted way to do it. As a cross reference, you’ll only need to fill out O’Brien’s information once, then the title of the case with the page numbers. It just doesn’t get any easier. PAGE \# "'Page: '#' '" Here again is the title of the case, as it will appear on the works cited page. PAGE \# "'Page: '#' '" This is the author’s last name in reference to which entry I should look at. PAGE \# "'Page: '#' '" And of course, the page numbers in O’Brien where Roe will be found. PAGE \# "'Page: '#' '" Note the italics of the case within the sentence. PAGE \# "'Page: '#' '" Two things of interest. 1) This is an indirect citation of an article, so it won’t really need a page number. However, since there’s going to be more than one reference to the same O’Brien in the WC, we need to include a short abbreviation of the title to cue the reader into knowing which reference is which. 2) note that multiple entries are cited within the bracket and separated with a semi-colon. PAGE \# "'Page: '#' '" Two things: 1) indirect citation of the Lambert case means citing the case as a whole – no page numbers unless you take a direct quote. 2) Note that the font here will match the font on the Works Cited page – Even though it’s italicized earlier. PAGE \# "'Page: '#' '" For a direct quote, include the author’s name (ideally) or the first word or so of the title as it appears on the works cited page. In this case, Roe is in regular font and includes the page number from O’Brien that the quote appears on. PAGE \# "'Page: '#' '" Notice that the cases appear as they would on the Works Cited Page and are separated by semi-colons. PAGE \# "'Page: '#' '" Notice that all entries are alphabetical based on whatever information’s available. Basically, whatever the first word of the entry is (with the exception of A, The, Of or other prepositions) is what you alphabetize with. PAGE \# "'Page: '#' '" This case was never argued in court, so this is the date it was decided. I had to look it up. PAGE \# "'Page: '#' '" Notice the hanging indent for entries longer than one line. PAGE \# "'Page: '#' '" OK, so what do the dashes mean? In this case, the “David O’Brien” who wrote this article on Roe just so happens to be the same guy listed above. The dashes are what we use to show this. You can also see that the article reference here cross lists with citing O’Brien in it’s entirety above. PAGE \# "'Page: '#' '" Take note of the fact that this is even, double spacing throughout. There are no numbers, bullets, or single spaced entries. I’m also rather proud of the fact that even in this tiny entry – there are no internet sources listed.
