This year we will be participating in The Thread Project. From the home page : Become part of this amazing cloth. Join thousands of people from around the world by sending a piece of ribbon, hemp, string, or other fiber to The Thread Project: One World, One Cloth. The individual threads are being tied together and woven into seven world cloths-the first of which is called "Hope Materializing." These cloths celebrate the boldness of our cultural diversity and the unity of our human hearts. Resembling large wall tapestries, these cloths will hang in nations throughout the world, reminding people that we are, ultimately, a global family of one." So we would be delighted to receive threads from our newsletter readers and their networks and we will pack up balls and send them in to the project. Solution focused brief therapy for gifted students. I have found that many gifted students need someone outside the immediate family to chat to, and run ideas past. Solution focused brief therapy is, as its name suggests, designed for short term intervention with problems that are immediate and a nuisance for the student. The premise for the intervention is that the solution to an issue is within the students current repertoire it is simply not recognised as an answer or it is not feasible to use in the current emotional climate. I am now able to provide this form of counselling for gifted students. The solution focused approach requires that the student and I look at strengths rather than problems. I then support and encourage growth in the directions that are already working positively, however weak that positive is. My interest and focus is always with the social/emotional development of students. Larger scale problems require longer term interventions and thus will be referred on or a suitable time table will be negotiated. Sessions by appointment only, e.mail contact results in a quicker response! HYPERLINK "mailto:AJxn@bigpond.com"AJxn@bigpond.com Anne Jackson Mindful! Phone (03) 9808 1460 CONFERENCES, WORKSHOPS, P.D. Do they solve problems in unusual ways? Do they think in pictures rather than in words? If so, they are not alone. At least one-third of the population thinks in images. These are children who would rather spend the day with a new box of LEGOsTMthan do nearly anything else in the world. Kids who can get so absorbed in creative play, they lose all sense of time. Children who find joy and appreciation in watching the bugs in the grass and dont need to seek outside stimulation from video games or TVexcitement is all around them! Often labeled unorganized, unfocused, poor spellers or worse, these topsy-turvy kids can be equal parts pleasure and frustration to raise. Raising Topsy-Turvy Kids includes stories from families across the country with anecdotes about identifying, nurturing, parenting and teaching these remarkable children. Children who share a state of being utterly unpredictable, totally out-of-sync with their age peers, blissfully unaware of time ...topsy-turvy! Alexandra "Allie" Golonis Marketing Director for the Institute for the Study of Advanced Development, and its subsidiaries, the Gifted Development Center and the Visual-Spatial Resource. She coordinates the Gifted Development Center Speakers Bureau and serves as Executive Assistant to Linda Silverman. As a founding member of the Visual-Spatial Resource Access Team, a former G/T teacher and homeschooling parent to two exceptionally gifted visual-spatial learners, Allie brings a wealth of experience to her book,Raising Topsy-Turvy Kids: Successfully Parenting Your Visual-Spatial Child. Allie has been invited to present on homeschooling issues and on parenting visual-spatial learners at state, national and international venues. Cost : $75.00 Tuesday March 22, 2005 9.00 am - 4.00 pm Whole day workshop for teachers with Dr Linda Kreger Silverman Upside-down brilliance : the visual-spatial learner Most people think in words; however, one-third of the student body thinks in images, and this percentage is growing. School was designed for auditory-sequential, left-hemispheric students who process in words. High achievers are advanced in reading, writing, spelling, calculation and memorization, and perform well under timed conditions. Visual-spatial learners are gifted in right-hemispheric abilities, such as imagination, visualization, intuitive knowledge, multi-dimensional perception, science and technology, holistic thinking, creativity, artistic expression (music, dance, art, drama), and emotional responsiveness. These gifts are vital to employment in the 21stcentury and need to be nurtured. Specific strategies for identifying and teaching visual-spatial learners have been drawn from the new book,Upside-Down Brilliance: The Visual-Spatial Learner. Linda Kreger Silverman, Ph.D., is a licensed psychologist. She directs the Institute for the Study of Advanced Development, and its subsidiaries, the Gifted Development Center (www.gifteddevelopment.com), and Visual-Spatial Resource (www.visualspatial.org), in Denver, Colorado. Over 4,500 children have been assessed at the Gifted Development Center in the last 25 years. Her Ph.D. is in educational psychology and special education from the University of Southern California. For nine years, she served on the faculty of the University of Denver in counseling psychology and gifted education. Her textbook,Counseling the Gifted and Talented(Love: 1993), is the most popular text in this area; it has been adopted at more than 50 colleges and universities. Her new book,Upside-Down Brilliance: The Visual-Spatial Learner, was released November, 2002. She founded the only journal on adult giftedness,Advanced Development. Currently, she is conducting research on profoundly gifted children, the visual-spatial learner, comparative assessment of the gifted on different instruments, the effects of vision therapy and introversion. Linda has been studying the assessment, psychology and education of the gifted since 1961 and she has written over 300 articles, chapters and books in this field.
