We will be reading various novels, short stories, poems, plays, and other pieces of non-fiction by American authors over the course of the year. Certain essential questions will drive our study this year: -Why is it important to study American literature as well as American history? -What is personal identity? What is American identity? What do the authors well read this year have to say about identity and how do they do it? We will also be reviewing vocabulary, grammar, and other elements of composition. Our goal will be to advance your writing skills so that you are prepared for senior year and beyond. Most importantly, this class is about ideas. I want you to come to class ready to think and reflect. We will be committed as a class to creating an environment where voices are heard and respected. I need everyones help to make that happen. We will be learning from each other, and I look forward to hearing from all of you this year. Expectations: I expect from each of you the highest quality work of which you are capable. If you want to earn an A in this class, you will be able to. I will make myself available to you to discuss your work and to help you in the areas in which you may need to improve. I will be in my room after school Monday and Tuesday until 3:00 and Wednesday until 2:45.. I am also reachable via email, if you prefer. Assessments: We will have three to four tests and/or projects each quarter. In addition, well have another four or five grammar and vocabulary quizzes which will average into one test grade. Most of your homework will be reading assignments. You can expect to be quizzed and/or complete writing assignments on the readings. Youll also be often be working on long-term projects and papers. Youre juniors in high school, its time to start working on budgeting your time. Well be doing a lot of in-class writing this year. The vast majority of that will be ungraded free-writes based on a prompt I assign you. Ill ask you to write for a solid five to ten minutes, and if you do that, youll get five points. If we have twenty free writes in a quarter, that means that if you do all the free-writes, you can earn the equivalent of a 100 on a test. You will be provided a rubric for all assignments this year. Attendance: Please see the Student Handbook for the schools attendance policy. Time and work missed due to absences must be made up after school. Remember, it is your responsibility to come see me to make up missing work. All time and work must be made up within ten days. That does not necessarily mean you have ten full until you have to make it up. I will be staying after on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Wednesdays, so if you are absent on a Friday, and come to me ten school days later on the second following Friday, I will not be able to accommodate you. Failure to make up work and time will result in a two point deduction from your quarter grade. Please note, if you are absent the day of a test or a quiz, you will be required to make up that test or quiz on the first day you are back in school. Tardiness: I have a very low tolerance for tardiness. Lateness disrupts the class. It is rude to your fellow students. It gets on my nerves. Please make an effort to be in your seat and ready to work when the bell rings. If you are late to a class, expect to come to my room after school that day. If you cant come after school because of other commitments, then you should not come late to class. Materials: Come to class every day with a notebook and pen. I will let you know ahead of time if you are required to bring a book to class. Please respect the books you are issued. They should be properly covered while you have them. Return them in the same condition in which you received them. Conduct: First and foremost, you are expected to show respect for your classmates, for me, and for yourself. This means conducting yourself as an adult during class. I have a good nature, but I do not appreciate being taken advantage of. I do not have a policy for bathroom passes, but I will notice if you are abusing the system, and I will not give you any more passes. Modern communications technology is a wonderful thing, but you will have to enjoy it outside of my classroom. To be sure youre not text messaging, I will have to insist that all bags remain off the desk, and all hands remain on them. As per school policy, no food is allowed in the classroom. For my part My goal for this class is to give you something you didnt have before you came to me. The last thing I want to do is waste your time. If there is something you want to get out of this class or a way you think you can learn better, please, let me know! The point of this class is for you to learn, and I welcome any suggestions that will help us to achieve that. #$%1NOXv| : ; h 8 W ,-;c ᣟ~zhTp/h7 Wh@N hL _5h"35hXhL _hQEh&nhzh[x h7 Wh7 WhD CJaJh7 Wh7 WCJaJh7 Wh7 W5CJaJ h&5 h})5 h3|y5 h[x5huh[xhP5 hTp/5 h7 W5h[xhu5/$%O 9 gd7 W.$d%d&d'dNOPQ]^gd7 W1$$d%d&d'dNOPQ]^a$gd7 W$a$gdu ,-,-jk./\] gdgd?hT :F-jkuwxL)-.;[\]dgʽƲƚ㏋xs h"355h"35h[x5 hhhuh4^ h hL _hh"35h"35h"355h"35h5h hp*hp*h[xh. hp*>*hp*h7Qh@NhL _ hL _5hL _h[x5 h5hzh(jh hTp/h7 Whk[-g~hu hu5h6666666666666666666666666666666666666666666666666hH6666666666666666666666666666666666666666666666666666666666666666662 0@P`p2( 0@P`p 0@P`p 0@P`p 0@P`p 0@P`p 0@P`p8XV~_HmH nH sH tH @`@ NormalCJ_HaJmH sH tH DA D Default Paragraph FontRiR Table Normal4 l4a (k (No List *W* 7 WStrong5\HH QE Balloon TextCJOJQJ^JaJPK![Content_Types].xmlj0Eжr(΢Iw},-j4 wP-t#bΙ{UTU^hd}㨫)*1P' ^W0)T9<l#$yi};~@(Hu* Dנz/0ǰ $ X3aZ,D0j~3߶b~i>3\`?/[G\!-Rk.sԻ..a濭?PK!֧6 _rels/.relsj0 }Q%v/C/}(h"O = C?hv=Ʌ%[xp{۵_Pѣ<1H0ORBdJE4b$q_6LR7`0̞O,En7Lib/SeеPK!kytheme/theme/themeManager.xml M @}w7c(EbˮCAǠҟ7՛K Y, e.|,H,lxɴIsQ}#Ր ֵ+!,^$j=GW)E+& 8PK!Ptheme/theme/theme1.xmlYOo6w toc'vuر-MniP@I}úama[إ4:lЯGRX^6؊>$ !)O^rC$y@/yH*񄴽)޵߻UDb`}"qۋJחX^)I`nEp)liV[]1M<OP6r=zgbIguSebORD۫qu gZo~ٺlAplxpT0+[}`jzAV2Fi@qv֬5\|ʜ̭NleXdsjcs7f W+Ն7`g ȘJj|h(KD- dXiJ؇(x$( :;˹!
