Chemical changes, however, result in the formation of new substances with different properties. Some general signs of a chemical change include a change of color or odor, the formation of a precipitate (solid), the formation of a gas, and a change in heat or light. In this lab, you will perform different activities and, based on your observations, determine whether a chemical or physical change has taken place. Match ChalkVinegarWaterSucroseCalcium chloride solutionSodium carbonate solutionMortar and pestleTest tubesCandleFoil SquareTongs SAFETY Before lighting the match, tie back long hair and secure loose clothing. After extinguishing the match, thoroughly douse it with water before placing it in the designated waste beaker. Do not ingest any chemicals. Absolutely no goofing off. PROCEDURE Perform each of the following activities and carefully observe what happens. After each activity, complete your data table. Lighting a match Light a single match (refer to safety precautions listed above). Lighting a candle: Light a single candle. Observe the candle for 45 seconds. Heating Sucrose: Take a pinch of sugar and place it on the foil. Using the tongs, hold the foil over the candle for approximately 1 minute. Crushing chalk Use a mortar and pestle to crush a piece of chalk. Mixing crushed chalk with vinegar In a test tube, mix a small amount of the crushed chalk from Activity #2 with vinegar. Mixing crushed chalk with water In a test tube, mix a small amount of the crushed chalk from Activity #2 with water. Dissolving sucrose in water In a test tube, dissolve a small amount of sucrose in water. Mixing CaCl2 and Na2CO3 solutions In a test tube, combine several drops each of the calcium chloride and sodium carbonate solutions. Activity TitleChemical or Physical ChangeEvidence Directions: Look at each of the following situations and identify as CHEMICAL or PHYSICAL, then explain why. A bridge is rusting_______________ WHY? Ice cube melting__________________ WHY? Mix baking soda and Vinegar___________ WHY? Cooking a hamburger______________ WHY? Solid Air Freshener_________________ WHY? A pane of glass is shattered_________ WHY? Explain what a chemical & physical change is and give examples of each. Your audience is third graders. Use complete sentences. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 8th grade science Adapted from a lab at HYPERLINK "http://www.nisd.net/communicationsarts/pages/chem/docs/chemphys_lab.doc" http://www.nisd.net/communicationsarts/pages/chem/docs/chemphys_lab.doc HYPERLINK "http://www.thesciencequeen.net" www.thesciencequeen.net 2008 Materials: Data: Analyze: Conclusion oz<C7A % : < ^ _ ` p 0 Q " = } ; c d CDjCJOJQJUjCJOJQJUOJQJ CJOJQJ5H*OJQJ\5OJQJ\5OJQJ\^J 5H*\5\5CJOJQJ\ CJOJQJ5CJjCJUmHnHu5;OJQJ\^J6NOo$If $dzzzzz$If$$Iflur %}}}}s%64 la$%1789:Xzzzzz$If$$Ifl;r %}}}}s%64 la:;<C67~WIDD~ & F & F dx&d$d!%d"&d!'d%N!O"P!Q%$$Iflur %}}}}s%64 la7A ` 0 " } 2 ; $$Ifa$ & F & F dx dx&d$d!%d"&d!'d%N!O"P!Q%; < = > ? yyn !$If$If$$Ifl$F%{ 0p%6 4 la? @ A B C yyy$If$$Ifl$F%{ 0p%6 4 laC D E F G yyy$If$$IflF%{ 0p%6 4 laG H I J K L M N O yyyyyy$If$$Ifl$F%{ 0p%6 4 laO P Q R S yyy$If$$IflF%{ 0p%6 4 laS T U V W X Y Z [ yyyyyy$If$$Ifl$F%{ 0p%6 4 la[ \ ] ^ _ yyy$If$$IflF%{ 0p%6 4 la_ ` a c r $ }}}wm_wm_hh7$8$H$^h`h & F7$8$H$7$8$H$$$IflMF%{ 0p%6 4 la $ % L Q R t y z RS$a$$a$dhhh7$8$H$^h`h & F7$8$H$7$8$H$DE5OJQJ\^J5;OJQJ\^JOJQJjCJOJQJU CJOJQJ0JCJOJQJjCJOJQJUdh 1h/ =!"#$%DyK Hhttp://www.nisd.net/communicationsarts/pages/chem/docs/chemphys_lab.docyK http://www.nisd.net/communicationsarts/pages/chem/docs/chemphys_lab.docyX;H,]ą'cDyK www.thesciencequeen.netyK Xhttp://www.thesciencequeen.net/yX;H,]ą'c i8@8 NormalCJ_HaJmH sH tH T`T Heading 1$&d @&P 5CJOJQJ\^J<A@< Default Paragraph Font>O> p3 d1$CJOJQJaJh>O> p2 d1$CJOJQJaJh,@, Header !, @", Footer !.U`1.
