Ill be your teacher, Mrs. Ferrari with my marvelous assistant Mrs. Ellerbrock! I am extremely excited about starting my third year in Peru. Our year is going to be awesome! Our classroom has an amazing theme all about monsters! Dont be scared, these monsters are very friendly and fuzzy too! All about the Big Monster: As you may or may not know I am a brand new mommy. My little monster (Carlo Allen Ferrari) arrived on June 17, 2011. He weighed 6 pounds 14 oz. and was 20 inches long. Due to being a mommy, I will not be back at school until Tuesday, September 6th. The person filling in for me is Mrs. Peterson. She will forward any and all questions to me. Do not hesitate to email me as well. I am a graduate of Northern Illinois University where I studied Child Development. Once I graduated I started my career as a preschool teacher for Head Start in Granville, IL. I then decided to further my studies and continue my education by receiving a Masters degree in Early Childhood Education. After this, I received a job teaching preschool for Lincoln Elementary school in Ottawa, IL. I left Ottawa for Peru where I fell in love with Perus outstanding school system. My background has created a wonderful foundation for teaching preschool. I presently live in Spring Valley, where I was born and raised. I am married to Ray Ferrari Jr. and we have a beautiful little boy Carlo and a three year old shiatsu named Marley. Some things I do along with teaching are, coach the Hall High School Devilettes, and I am attending Saint Francis University where I am studying for a Masters in Administration. I am extremely busy but in my spare time I enjoy reading, and spending time with my friends and family. Monsters incorporated (Our class): Our classroom theme this year is Monsters. The classroom is set up with adorable furry friends that your children will really enjoy. Our classroom hours are AM: 8:30-11:00, PM: 11:45-2:15PM. Attached you can find our class schedule and a little but about what we do. The curriculum we use is the Creative Curriculum. This is an outstanding curriculum used to explore all areas of development; social, emotional, cognitive, physical, and language skills. The preschool handbook explains this curriculum more thoroughly. Our classroom is set up exemplifying this curriculum and includes the following centers: reading, math, science, music, writing, listening, dramatic play, blocks, art, exploring, and gross motor. Along with this curriculum we have added Michael Heggertys Phonemic Awareness . This is a 35 week Curriculum of daily Phonemic awareness lessons, developed on a systematic scope and sequence of skills with explicit modeling that will be used to prepare your child for reading. Other Important Information for the adult Monsters: Absences: If your child is sick or will be absent please call (815) 223-2567. If you know ahead of time you can always send a note and I will share it with the office. If you will be leaving on an extended trip (2 or more days) you will need to get approved by the office. Attendance: A successful school experience is the responsibility of the child, the parent and the school. Your child's progress, both academically and socially, is influenced to a great extent by daily participation. Regular attendance without tardiness is key to success. Arrival and Dismissal: Students should arrive between, AM ClassPM ClassArrival8:25AM 8:30AM11:40AM 11:45PMClass Begins8:30AM11:45PMDismissal11:00AM2:15PMSupervision by the school staff is not available prior to 8:25AM/11:40AM. No child or parent should be in the building before this time. Students are dismissed from the East playground door. Please pick up your child promptly. If you are late, look for your child in the office. Folders: Your child will need a two pocket folder, clearly labeled with their first and last name on it. This will be used to communicate notes back and forth on a daily bases. Some days there may not be notes, but please check this daily. If you have any notes for me, put them in the folder and date them and I will respond as soon as possible. Computers: We are fortunate to have a Smartboard and two computers in our classroom. We use a variety of age-appropriate programs that reinforce math, shapes, colors readiness, and reading skills. Children will work on the computers during free choice time. Your child will also have an opportunity to utilize the Smartboard daily, during circle time and free choice time. Library: We will visit our library once a week. Mrs. Spelich our librarian will be with us on these visits. She will read a story to our class, and then will give each child the opportunity to choose one book to check out for a week. Your child will receive a bag, with his/her name on it to carry the book they choose. Please help your child remember to return library books and bags weekly, so that he/she may check out new books each week. Library books can be checked out for 1 week, and Mrs. Spelich will send a friendly reminder, if the books are not returned. If your child has a checked out book during our library time they will not be able to check out another book until the other book is returned. If you cannot find the book, please contact me ASAP. Please treat these books as if they were your own, if they are lost or damaged you will be fined accordingly. Music: Our music teacher, Mrs. Kelsey, will be teaching the children the basics of music education and will be sharing many wonderful songs! We are scheduled to have music for one 15-minute period weekly. Of course, I will be singing and enjoying music with the children daily. Art: The children will attend an art session weekly for 20 minutes. The art teacher Mrs. Wick will teach them about basic colors, and help them to create some beautiful master pieces. We will create several art projects throughout the school year within the classroom. I do like to hang them outside in the hallway for all to see. Once they have been displayed for some time, I will send them home, for you to enjoy as well! Nurse: We are very fortunate to have a wonderful health aide, Mrs. Heuser, at Northview School. She will tend to minor scratches and scrapes, as well as sudden illnesses. For more serious injuries, she will contact you. Please be sure to send in any change of contact numbers in case she needs to get in touch with you. Weekly Letters: Each week I will be sending home letters that discuss our weekly themes. I will discuss the things your child will be learning, and also provide you with at home activities that correlate with the themes. I may also put reminders in these notes for important dates. Snack Calendars: At the beginning of the year you will receive a snack calendar. This calendar will have each childs name on it. If you should happen to loose the calendar there is a link on my web page, where you can print another one. The name on the right side is the AM students; the left side is PM students. You will only have to provide snacks once a month, unless there is a special occasion. You are given the calendar in advanced, therefore if you cannot provide snack for any reason please contact me ASAP. *Means this is your childs Birthday please bring in Birthday treats! ** Means this is when we are celebrating your childs Birthday please bring Birthday Treats! Snack Policy: As you may know we have a healthy snack policy. This means your snacks must be low sugar healthy snacks. Please refer to the handbook for some suggested snacks. Each student will provide twenty pre-packaged snacks on their assigned day. Because of food allergies, homemade and snacks with peanut butter are prohibited. You may bring pre-packaged sweets for a Birthday. Unfortunately, if your child brings anything that is not allowed we will have to send it back and request another snack. If you have any questions regarding this matter feel free to contact me. Discipline Procedure: In my classroom I use positive words that will help redirect negative behaviors. I have a bee hive chart, with each hive the colors of a stoplight, and magnetic bees on the hives. These bees and bee hives are used to represent the one, two, three, magic method. Each childs name is on one of the bees and is placed on the green hive. If a child does something that necessitates a warning (taking toys, running, yelling, mean words, hurting others, etc.), the first time they will receive a verbal warning. Following the verbal warning will be discussion with the child telling them specifically what they are doing that is inappropriate. If the behavior continues they are warned again, this time they will need to move their bee to the yellow hive. If the behavior continues for a third time the child must move their bee to the red hive, sit in time out for two minutes, and will receive a call home. After two minutes the child is talked to about what they did. If any violent acts take place it is an immediate time-out. The child will also receive a phone call home. If we see your child is having a difficult time with rules frequently we may ask you to come in for a visit after school to discuss the behaviors and get a plan in place for your child. If at any time you are seeing behaviors at home and need some information on a behavior management program to use in the home please feel free to contact me and I would be happy to help. Rules: 1. Be Respectful Follow directions the first time given. Respect each other, yourself, & classroom materials. Listen while the teacher is talking. Work quietly (inside voices) 2. Be Responsible Bring your folder and book bag to school every day. Be ready to learn 3. Be Safe Keep hands, feet, and objects to yourself. Remember to use appropriate behavior at all times: Specials, hallways, outside on the Playground. Walk place to place. Rewarding Good Behavior Over the next month you will be receiving information on our District Wide Behavior System call PBIS. At Northview, we will reward students in all grade levels, in all areas of the school, by giving them tickets for BEEing Respectful, Responsible, and Safe. Children will also earn these tickets in our classroom for the same 3 expectations. They will then have opportunities to go to the Bee Shop (school store) to redeem the tickets for both tangible and intangible prizes. For example crayons, markers, wearing a hat to school, having extra recess with the prinicipal, etc. We will keep track of these tickets in the classroom by a check list. If your child should bring one home, it is okay I will have the documentation at school. Monsterous activities: Each month I will be sending home either a monthly activity calendar, or a reading incentive calendar. The activities will be educationally based, and can be done with you and your child. This is great way to incorporate what we do at school into your home. If you fill out the suggested amount of activities and return it at the end of each month your child will receive a prize from my treasure chest! The reading calendar is a way to incorporate literacy into your home. Reading to your child is a critical way to encourage a love of reading. The calendar will ask you to color in objects every time you read to your child. Again, if this is filled in and turned back into me each month your child will receive a prize from the treasure chest! All About me: This year your child will be given a blank t-shirt shaped poster. Within this poster are headings for you to fill out with your child. You may answer the headings with pictures or words, depending on what you like. These posters will be given a couple of days before your childs birthday. They are due on the day your child celebrates their birthday (refer to snack calendar). They will be hung up in our classroom for everyone to enjoy. Room Parents: I will need one head room parent for each class, AM/PM. This parent will be chosen on a first come first serve bases. The head room parent will be responsible for planning parties, contacting other parents, and communicating with me. Room parents will be responsible for helping to plan and provide materials for special occasions. If you are interested in being a room parent or head room parent please fill out your choice on the Bright Futures Questionnaire please fill it out and return ASAP. Thank you! Scholastic Book Club: Scholastic magazines will go out the beginning of each month. Depending on the month, all orders and money will usually be due at the end of the month. I will take cash or check, please make checks out to Scholastic Book Clubs. The books will arrive approximately seven to ten days from the time the orders are placed. Each time you place an order the class will receive points, that can be redeemed for free purchases that will be utilized within your childs classroom!! Another convenient way to order is through the scholastics webpage. You just go to HYPERLINK "http://www.scholastics.com" www.scholastics.com and look for the tab that says parents. The magazines that I send each month will be accessible on this website. You can order here, and pay with a credit or debit card. The username is linz3082 password is preschool. Each time you order online our classroom receives a free book! We really appreciate any orders you place, thank you very much! Show and Tell: Every Friday we will be having Show and Tell. Your child may bring in one item from home that they would like to talk about. Sometimes I require certain items, but you will be notified if so! Also note that children will not be allowed to play with these items throughout the day, they are strictly for Show and Tell. Bringing toys to school, other than for Show and Tell, is discouraged for a number of reasons. If a toy is accidentally lost or broken, feelings will be hurt. Please be sure that all toys, electronic games, etc., are kept at home. I Can This year we are working on promoting positive self worth, while incorporating self-help skills. The children need several skills to help prepare them for Kindergarten. These skills include; snapping, zipping, writing their name, opening a milk carton, saying the alphabet, cutting with scissors, counting, and reciting the ABCs to list a few. In our classroom I have two bulletin boards listing these skills. Every time the child masters these skills I will write their name on the board. Along with this board, we will be making a classroom book where they can add their names to the list once they have mastered the skill. This book will remain in the classroom library where the children can look at it, and show their friends. Visitors: Northview has a policy that ALL GUESTS (including familiar faces) are required to check in at the school office. Northview welcomes and encourages family involvement. It is important to remember that while this may seem inconvenient to frequent visitors, it is the goal and responsibility of the school to create a safe learning environment for all of its children. Mrs. Ferraris Webpage: We do have a class website.www.perued.net, click on Northview School, Teacher pages, and then Mrs. Ferrari. Here you will find the thematic units, weekly letters, monthly calendars, a class schedule, web links, important reminders and some fun photos. If you need any extra forms you may print them out there. I will do my best to keep this updated for your benefit. No More Monster Muck To conclude, I am extremely excited to start another school year! Please remember you are your childs first and most important teacher! Feel free to come and visit anytime! I am thrilled to watch your child grow and learn in a developmentally appropriate environment. As also questions, comments, concerns can be addressed to HYPERLINK "mailto:lferrari@perued.net" lferrari@perued.net or call anytime @ (815) 223-2578. If you leave me a message I will do everything I can to respond ASAP. **Also a reminder our District Wide Open House is Thursday September 15.
