He excelled as a painter, sculptor, engineer, architect and scientist. He is considered to be one of the three great creators of High Renaissance art in Italy (1490-1530). Renowned as a master of oil painting, and the use of shadow to create a 3-D effect and using slightly different tones of color creating an almost imperceptible transition from light to dark. Sadly only a fraction of his art has survived; about 15 pictures in all. These few paintings, together with over 3500 pages of writings and drawings, which many are written backwards, are considered some the best art of the Renaissance. Examples of Famous Works 1. 2. 3. Michelangelo (1475-1564) He was the true Renaissance Man; a sculptor, painter, architect, and poet. He was famous for portraying the human body in painting and sculpture, and depicting humanism in his art. His extraordinary diversity of talent made him one of the great inspirational forces behind the High Renaissance and one of the greatest artists of all time. Examples of Famous Works 1. 2. 3. Raphael (1483-1520) He was an Italian architect and painter of the High Renaissance. He was best known for the perfection and grace in his artwork. Raphael was considered a master, who studied under Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo. The famous subjects of his works were the Madonna and Child, and he was so popular that when he died at age 37, many Romans including the Pope went into mourning. Examples of Famous Works 1. 2. 3. Donatello (1386-1466) Donatello was a Renaissance artist born in Florence, Italy. He was famous for his shadow relief sculpture. He worked in bronze, stone, wood, and even terracotta. He was able to bring sculpture to life by infusing it with narrative, and by combining realism with powerful emotion. His sculptures are full of energy and thought, as if ready to spring into action. Examples of Famous Works 1. 2. 3. Sandro Botticelli (1445-1510) One of the great painters of the Early Renaissance, and by 1480 was possibly the most influential painter in the city of Florence. He was commissioned by Pope Sixtus IV to paint the Story of Moses in the Sistine Chapel. He spent virtually all of his life working for the great families of Florentine society, notably the HYPERLINK "http://www.visual-arts-cork.com/history-of-art/medici-family-florence-renaissance.htm" Medici family. He specialized in idealized paintings of classical mythology that are filled with atmosphere and enormously imaginative figures. He used tempera paint, which is mix of color-pigments, water, and egg yolks, or whole eggs. Botticelli painted most of his pictures on wooden panels, and completed many wall-paintings. Examples of Famous Works 1. 2. 3. Tiziano Vecelli (Titian) (1488-1576) He was an Italian painter and the leader of the 16th-century Venetian school of the Italian Renaissance. Titian was one of the most versatile Italian painters, equally adept at portraits, landscapes, mythological and religious subjects. His painting methods, particularly in the application and use of color, would have a profound influence not only on painters of the Italian Renaissance, but on future generations of Western art. Examples of Famous Works 1. 2. 3. Albrecht Durer (1471-1528) He was a German painter, printmaker and theorist from Nuremberg. He studied in Italy and is known for woodcuts, engravings, and paintings of religious and mythical subjects, realistic landscapes and self-portraits. His watercolors mark him as one of the first European landscape artists, while his ambitious woodcuts revolutionized the potential of that medium. His prints established his reputation across Europe when he was still in his twenties, and he has been conventionally regarded as the greatest artist of the Northern Renaissance ever since. He is also well known for his portrait of Henry VIII. Examples of Famous Works 1. 2. 3. Jan van Eyck (1395-1441)He was a Flemish painter, referred to as the founding father of Dutch fine painting and the inventor of the layered oil painting technique used to create a subtle blending of colors to accent clothing and jewels. His paintings displayed realistic detail and personality. Van Eyck's most famous work is the Altarpiece for St Bavo's Cathedral in Ghent - a work in 20 panels with The Adoration of the Lamb of God as its central piece. It is believed that he painted it in part with his brother Hubert. The work is widely considered as one the highlights of the Northern Renaissance. Some 30 works by Jan van Eyck have survived, which are mostly religious works and portraits. He is considered one of the best Northern European painters of the 15th c. Examples of Famous Works 1. 2. 3. Pieter Bruegal (1525-1569)He is known as the greatest Flemish painter of the 16th century, whose landscapes and vigorous, often witty scenes of peasant life are particularly renowned. His work is focused, detailed, colorful, and realistic, especially with regard to people. He painted various scenes from everyday peasant life with large numbers of people and his paintings usually illustrated proverbs and morals and even taught lessons. He had a strong influence on painting in the Low Countries, and through his sons Jan and Pieter he became the ancestor of a dynasty of painters that survived into the 18th century.
