This study demonstrates how Jesus continually looked beyond the superficial to the real issue. He is our Good Shepherd, Messiah, King and the Vine, who gives us life. He is our Bridegroom who wants us to share in his glory. Finally, as our Savior he paid for our sins, conquered death, and gave us the privilege of continuing his mission to the world. The Author: The Apostle John is the writer and namesake for this gospel writing. He was the son of Zebedee the brother of James, these two were surnamed by the Lord The Sons of Thunder (Mark 3:17). John wrote three epistles, the Revelation and this gospel. John was the beloved pastor at Ephesus, and later exiled to Patmos by the Emperor Domitian where he wrote the Book of Revelation. Central Theme: But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, to those who believe in His name John 1:12 And truly Jesus did many other signs in the presence of His disciples, which are not written in this book; but these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that believing you may have life in His name. John 20:30-31 The Structure of the book: The Prologue - 1:1-18 (prologue: the preface or introduction to a literary work) Jesus Public Ministry - 1:19 through 12:50 Jesus Private Ministry chapters 13 through 17 Jesus Suffering and Death chapters 18 and 19 Victory over death - chapters 20 and 21 The major differences in Johns gospel: omissions in the Gospel of John. The conclusion John 21:25 No genealogy is recorded at all (as in Matthew and Luke). No account of His birth because He was in the beginning. Nothing about His childhood Nothing about His temptations Nothing about His transfiguration No account of the ascension No great commission charge Three Keys to Johns Gospel: John 1:12 _____________________________________________________________________ John 16:28 ____________________________________________________________________ John 20:31 ____________________________________________________________________ The Prologue: John 1:1-18 - The WORD became Flesh: 1.
