Learning Targets: I can accurately measure an individuals pulse rate. I can conduct an experiment to measure pulse recovery rate after exercise and relate this measure to a persons aerobic fitness. Background Information: When you exercise, your cells need more oxygen and glucose among other materials. Your muscle cells release messages to the brain to speed up the pumping of the heart to provide the extra oxygen and glucose. When you stop exercising the need for oxygen and glucose declines and your heart rate should slow down. How quickly you recover and reach homeostasis is a key indicator of personal fitness. One goal of exercise is to improve your recovery rate from activity. In this lab you will monitor and analyze changes in heart-rate caused by exercise, as well as measure recovery time for homeostasis. Procedure: Determine who your subjects will be. This can be different people in your family, friends, or completed in LL with the class. You need a minimum of 5 subjects. Take the subjects resting pulse rate using the method shown in class. Record this in the table below. Have the subject conduct 2-4 minutes of moderate exercise (stairs, jogging, jumping jacks, etc.) Take the subjects pulse rate immediately upon completion of the exercise and record in the table below. Have the subject sit and rest for two minutes, check their pulse after two minutes. Repeat this until you have an estimate of the time for their pulse to recover to the resting heart rate level. Repeat this procedure for each subject; record all data in the table below. Fill free to add more columns if needed. Data Table #1 : Heart rate Data Resting Heart rateHeart rate immediately after exercise Recovery Time ( Time for subject to get back to resting)- estimateSubject #1 Initial reading = ______ bpm ________ bpm ___________ secondsSubject #2 Initial reading = ______ bpm ________ bpm ___________ secondsSubject #3 Initial reading = ______ bpm ________ bpm ___________ secondsSubject #4 Initial reading = ______ bpm ________ bpm ___________ secondsSubject #5 Initial reading = ______ bpm ________ bpm ___________ secondsAVG = AVG =AVG = Data Analysis: Fill in the graph below for each subject in your group. Please make a line graph and use different colors for each subject. Label each subjects line. Can draw on a separate sheet of paper or complete in another program, then attach to dropbox. Whatever is easiest! Recovery Time (seconds) Which test subject recovered the fastest? _______________________________ What does a fast recovery time indicate? ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Define homeostasis: Why does your heart rate increase when you do exercise? Be specific. _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Exercise causes your breathing to increase too. How does that work with the increase in heart rate? ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Is this an example of negative or positive feedback?
