This work was initiated through a two day retreat in which we invited leaders of other national community development professional groups to discuss the present state and future of the field. Three annual Community Development Society conferences had special sessions that focused on approaches to working with diverse communities. CDS and the Southern Rural Development Center co-sponsored two community development institutes for the Mississippi Delta region. This led to revival of the Mississippi Community Development Society.
