Cognitive: The student will be able to demonstrate the knowledge of cornhole by following the rules of the game and using correct form of the underhand throw. Affective: The student will be able to demonstrate cooperation skills by not throwing objects at other students, giving the thrower enough space to throw, and not having any physical contact with the thrower as well as not taunting them. Teacher: The teacher will both explain and demonstrate the activities at the same time so students can both hear and see how to play the games. Equipment: 5 sets of Cornhole games, 10 hula hoops, 40 beanbags Protocols: Go students begin activity Freeze students stop what they are doing, place their beanbags on the floor, and quietly listen for further instructions Rotate students on one side of the games will rotate to their right to the next cornhole game Set Induction: Who is excited for it to get real warm and sunny so you can go outside to play?! What are some fun things you like to do outside? Awesome! Does anyone have family parties and cookouts in the spring and summer time? Me too! One of my favorite games to play with my family is cornhole. Has anyone ever heard of it? Well it is a really fun game that people play at picnics, family gatherings, parties, and tailgates that involves beanbags and a board with holes in, and that is what I am going to be teaching you today! LESSON CONTENT & PROGRESSIONS Introduction, skill(s), activity, reviewTeaching Cues The cues are short quotes of what you are saying to students to remind them of proper form. MANAGERIAL STRATEGIES Organization of space, equipment, students (diagrams of practice formations, equipment set up, and game situations), including method for assigning students to groupsSafety Procedures Checking field, equipment, and facilities for debris, damage, etc. What safety procedures will you take to make sure ALL students are safe in your class?IA: IA: Stretches Pick 7 of the following and do 20 counts of each: Jumping jacks (half-jacks for K arms only go up shoulder height) Squats Toe stretch Skiing jump side to side with both feet Arm circles Frankenstein put arms straight out in front and kick one leg up at a time as high as it can go Elevator lay on back, put legs straight up, lower to just above 6 inches from the floor, hold for 5-7 seconds, relax (4-5x) Butterfly sit on floor, bend knees so feet are touching and pull them in as close as you can Mountain climbers High knees Superman lay on stomach, put arms straight out in front, lift arms and legs off the ground (20 sec.) Grades 3-5 have leaders chosen by the teacher. They stand in the middle and pick whatever exercises/stretches they want to do. They may choose the above ones or others they know from sports, games, etc. All students must do 20 sit-ups and 20 pushups at the end. Activity 1: Beanbag Toss (K-2) Demonstrate the proper way to underhand throw a beanbag with the students Have them practice the form without a beanbag The partners standing on the side of the bean bags will throw first Partners will split the beanbags evenly between each other by color (4 red/4 blue) each student will get to throw 4 beanbags Students will toss the beanbags into the hoop across from them starting from about 10 feet away, gradually moving back each turn. Partners will alternate turns throwing their beanbags. After the first set of partners have thrown, the partners on the other side will do the same thing When students are not throwing they must stand behind the hula hoop so as to not interfere with the other players beanbags If students find they are too far back they are allowed to move closer a little in order to get their beanbags in the hoops After a couple minutes have the students do the same thing only this time throwing with the opposite arm Activity 2: Cornhole (K-2) All beanbags will start on one side Students standing on the side with the beanbags will split them up evenly alternating throws The cornhole board has 3 holes on it, each representing a different point (1, 2, or 3) Students will stand beside the board to throw, using correct form of the underhand throw to try to get their beanbags in any of the 3 holes Students on the same side will count their points up together After the one side has thrown it is the other sides turn, and they will do the same thing When students are not throwing they must stand behind the hula hoop so as to not interfere with the other players beanbags After a few minutes have the one side of students rotate down a cornhole game so they get a chance to play new students Activity 3: King of the Court (3-5) All beanbags will start on one side Partners will be on opposite sides of each other Players standing on the side with the beanbags will split them up with one team being blue and one team being red The cornhole board has 3 holes on it, each representing a different point (1, 2, or 3) Students will stand beside the board to throw, using correct form of the underhand throw to try to get their beanbags in any of the 3 holes Players will alternate throws one team throws one bag, then the other teams throws, etc. Players will keep adding their points up with their partners After the one side has thrown it is the other sides turn, and they will do the same thing When students are not throwing they must stand behind the hula hoop so as to not interfere with the other players beanbags Only after ALL beanbags have been thrown may players pick them up for their turn to throw A point is only made if the beanbag is more than halfway in the hole Games are played for 3 minutes at that time the teacher will yell freeze and no more beanbags will count after that time The far cornhole court will be known as the Kings Court The goal is to get to that court and stay there for the entire period to be considered the kings of the court Whichever team wins after 3 minutes of play rotates down to the next court closer to the Kings Court If a team wins at the kings court they stay and the non-winners go back to the first court If there is a tie there will be a shoot out 1 player from each team gets to throw 4 beanbags and whoevers bag gets in a hole or the closest wins and moves on This game continues until the end of class Opposite foot Follow through Opposite foot Follow through Opposite foot Follow through Students are spread throughout the entire area of the gym so they are not touching. Students are not standing close to or on any of the equipment. When students are finished have them sit either on the center circle or on a line where no equipment is. Already laid out will be 10 hula hoops and 5 sets of cornhole games, alternating each game. H C H C H C H H C H C H C H 8 beanbags (4 red and 4 blue) will be placed inside 5 hoops that are all on the same side. Have students get with the partner they just had for sit-ups and pushups. Partners will go to one hula hoop. If there is a hula hoop left over partners can share two hoops with one partner near the far hoop and the other partner across from them at the closer hoop. If there is too many players have a pair join a hoop to have 3 on each side. Have students take the beanbags and move to the cornhole game to their right. If there is too many students have six at a cornhole game with 3 students on each side. When a game is over have students slide all the beanbags to the same side to set up for the next game. After all the games are over have the students put the beanbags in the same hoop where they found them when they started the hoop game. Have students get with the partner they just had for sit-ups and pushups. Designate students to take the beanbags from the hula hoops to the cornhole courts. Partners will go to a cornhole court, with one partner on one side and one on the other. If there is an extra pair of partners they will play against each other for practice. When a game is over have students slide all the beanbags to the same side to set up for the next game. After all the games are over have the students put the beanbags either in the same hoop where they found them at the beginning of class or all on the same side of the cornhole courts depending what grade is coming into class next. Students are spread out far enough so they cannot touch or run into each other Students keep their heads up during exercises to be aware of their surroundings Students should not be touching any of the equipment that is out Make sure the games are spread out far enough beside each other so the games do not interfere No whipping the beanbags fast towards the other side No aiming or throwing objects at other students No stepping on the objects of the games No touching or yelling at an opponent so as to distract them No stepping in the middle of active games Step far enough out of the way when objects are being thrown to your side Be aware of other students throwing objects from other games No whipping the beanbags fast towards the other side No aiming or throwing objects at other students No stepping on the objects of the games No touching or yelling at an opponent so as to distract them No stepping in the middle of active games Step far enough out of the way when objects are being thrown to your side Be aware of other students throwing objects from other games No whipping the beanbags fast towards the other side No aiming or throwing objects at other students No stepping on the objects of the games No touching or yelling at an opponent so as to distract them No stepping in the middle of active games Step far enough out of the way when objects are being thrown to your side Be aware of other students throwing objects from other games Closure/Assessment: Questions: What are two cues for the underhand throw? Name three rules of the game cornhole. Psychomotor: Observation students are stepping with the opposite foot, bringing their arm back, and following through on their underhand throw. Cognitive: Observation students are playing cornhole by the rules and using the proper form of the underhand throw. Affective: Observation students are not throwing beanbags at each other, giving the thrower enough space and not having any physical contact with the them. Students will sit in the center circle.
