Assessment: Have students write three sentences in a group and share with the class. Then pass out a worksheet to each student with subject verb agreement sentences. Advance Preparation by Teacher: Have several three page books with singular and plural subjects on page one, singular and plural verbs on page two and adverbs on page three. Procedure: Introduction/Motivation: Explain that subject verb agreement is very important in everyday speaking so you can correctly state your thoughts clearly and be understood. Step-by-Step Plan: 1. Write a sentence with a singular subject and one sentence with a plural subject on the board. To show the difference between singular and plural subject verb agreement. Gardner: Verbal-Linguistic 2. Tell the students that the subject determines the form of the verb. 3. List rules regarding subject-verb agreement on the board i.e. Singular verbs often end with s, but plural verbs usually do not. 4. Hand out the books with subjects and verbs in them to each student Gardner: Visual-Spatial 5. Tell the kids to get with their reading partner and come up with three sentences using the booklets that they will then share with the class. Gardner: Visual-Spatial Gardner: Interpersonal 6. Let the children write fun and silly sentences but remind them that they must have subject-verb agreement. 7. Allow five to ten minutes for them to come up with these sentences walking around helping when needed. 8. Have each group share one sentence with the class asking the class if there should be any corrections and if so what needs to be done. 9. When a sentence needs corrected allow the students to write in on the board as ask class mates for suggestions in a D.O.L. format. 10. Hand out the worksheet for each child to take home and bring back the next day. Closure: Ask a few questions such as; What verb would you use with the subject hats?, and What subject would go well with the verb swings? Bloom: Level 1 Knowledge Also ask how they now when a verb agrees with a subject and what they have to think about when picking verbs to mach subjects. Bloom: Level 3 Application Adaptations/Enrichment: Have a student with a reading disability label the subjects as singular or plural before picking out a verb. Have a gifted student to the same activity adding adverbs to each sentence.
