COURSE TITLE AND NUMBER Health 111 Principles and Concepts in Personal Health II. SEMESTER CREDIT HOURS 3 semester credit hours III. CATALOG DESCRIPTION/PURPOSE Development of the understanding, attitudes, and practices which contribute to better individual health. IV. RATIONALE Today there are many health issues facing us. Heart disease, cancer, accidents, drug use, and mental health are important concerns for us, even if we are not directly affected by them. Environmental concerns, violence, health care costs, AIDS, and other STDs are becoming increasingly significant. These health concerns are not unmanageable. Fortunately we as individuals can make choices in the way we live our lives. At least on a personal level, we can decide to select a plan of healthful living. This course is designed to introduce the student to the information necessary to empower them to adopt a plan of healthful living. V. Each student will: 1. Identify and explain the dimensions of health and how they relate to total wellness 2. Explain the principles and goals of prevention, and differentiate prevention from protection. 3. Discuss the relationship between culture, economics, and health care. 4. Describe the factors that influence the development of health behavior. 5. Define stress and stressors and use the general adaptation syndrome to explain how stress relates to health. 6. Explain how you can improve your resistance to stress, and describe some techniques to help manage stress. 7. Describe the symptoms of stress-related adjustment disorders. 8. Explain the goal of psychological well-being and how it is essential to total wellness. 9. Identify some major psychological problems experienced by members of our society. 10. Discuss behaviors indicating the need for professional help and how to find such help. 11. List and explain the components of physical fitness. 12. Explain the benefits of exercise as a strategy for health promotion. 13. Plan a personal exercise program. 14. Explain current recommendations for healthy eating, and use the nutritional information provided on the new food labels to make healthy choices. 15. Explain the importance of food safety to personal health. 16. Identify and describe the symptoms and dangers associated with abnormal eating behaviors and eating disorders. 17. Define obesity and describe its relationship to genetics, lifestyle, and major health problems. 18. Compare and contrast the behavioral expectations for friendship, dating and mature love. 19. Describe the male and female reproductive systems and the functions of the individual components of each system. 20. Describe some ways to make responsible decisions about your sexuality. 21. Explain the process of conception in humans. 22. List the major options available for contraception, and explain the advantages and risks of each. 23. Define and give examples of preconception care. 24. Briefly describe fetal development and the three stages of labor and birth. 25. List ways of evaluating health news and online medical advice. 26. Describe how your body protects itself from infectious disease. 30. Describe some common infectious diseases. 31. List the sexually transmitted diseases and the symptoms and treatment for each. 32. Define HIV infection, and describe its symptoms. 33. List the methods of HIV transmission. 34. Explain some practical methods for preventing HIV infection and other sexually transmitted diseases. 35. List and explain the controllable and uncontrollable risk factors for cardiovascular disease. 36. Define hypertension and explain its cause, prevention, and treatment. 37. Define cancer, and list the risk factors, and describe practical behaviors to reduce the risk. 38. List the major forms of cancer and explain their risk factors and prevention. 39. Explain factors affecting drug dependence. 40. Describe the common forms and effects of amphetamines, depressants, cannabis products, cocaine, hallucinogens, and narcotic drugs. 41.
