In 2003-2004, about 35 teachers enrolled in coursework. Rebecca Cook has developed and implemented a supplementary on-line mentoring program to Eastern Special Education majors in their first through fourth year of teaching. The program is called TIPS: Technology Based Induction Process Support. Approximately 25 teachers are involved. Kathlene Shank presented in Spring 2004 on certification to the State Directors of Special Education. There were about 100 participants in this presentation. The Department of Special Education has an on-going partnership with Sangamon Area of Special Education. This partnership involves provision of the Special Education approved Standard Special Option and post-baccalaureate certification coursework on-site in Springfield, Illinois. In 2003-2004, there were 22 students enrolled in the provided coursework. Linda Kirby serves on the Charleston Community Unit Technology Committee. The goal of this committee is to enhance student learning through technology. Learners across the Charleston District are affected. Linda also serves on the College of Education and Professional Studies College Advisory Committee. Rebecca Cook was the outside evaluator of community based mentoring programs in the Effingham schools. Joy Russell chaired the State of Illinois LBS I Design Team to develop training to remove limitation on LBS certificates. 16 candidates completed or will complete LBS I certification through Project 30. Project 30 is a partnership between Eastern Illinois University, Department of Special Education and Wabash Ohio Valley Special Education Cooperative. Twenty-five new candidates are part of the new co-hort begun Fall 2004. A new partnership with AERO, a southwestern Chicago suburban cooperative, resulted in a co-hort of 16 beginning the Special Education course certification sequence Fall 2004. Georgia Burtard serves on the Board of Directors of the Sexual Assault Counseling and Information Service. The grant, the Regional New Teacher Induction Program, was awarded to the College and covers 11 school districts in central Illinois. This grant allows school districts to meet the requirement of having a mentoring program for first and second year teachers at no cost to the district. Rebecca Cook is the co-coordinator of the Regional New Teacher Induction Program that was funded and developed the mentoring program. This involves developing the induction program and developing day long training including: Adult Learning Theory, Reflection, Responding to Reflection, Qualities of Effective Teachers, Responsibilities of Mentors; she assessed the training needs of new teachers and mentors. Rebecca Cook developed the webpage for the Regional New Teacher Induction Program that supports teachers, mentor, and administrators in the eleven school districts. This addresses problems and possible solutions, resources, professional development options, access to forms for documenting induction activities, communication, tips for new teachers, mentors, administrators in relation to induction and PowerPoint slides of mentoring training that has been conducted in the past. Rebecca Cook has conducted numerous systematic inservice training sessions to assist school districts in meeting their 20% inservice in special education. The inservice training was completed in the Tuscola Elementary School and topics included: self-determination, accommodations and modifications, behavior management and positive behavioral supports (proactive strategies for preventing challenging behavior). Rebecca Cook is working on a database that consists of accommodations and modifications for each of the Illinois State Teaching Standards, preschool through High School. This database will be made available to teachers who have students demonstrating difficulty in meeting the standards. She is responsible for the standards in all areas from preschool through late elementary. The math database is the first area being addressed and the first section is completed.
