(By Don McQueen) Summary of EMDI deliveries during May 2011: SHORTLINES REGIONALS & INDUSTRIALS WESTERN: ONTARIO: Ottawa Central Vignette: the first image, if you turn a blind eye to the fact that there is no van bringing up the markers, it doesnt take much imagination to visualize the Ottawa Roadswitcher somewhere near Osgoode running northbound on the Prescott Sub with the Bedell Turn. Of course that was then, and this is now. What we see in fact is OCR 529-531 west of Woodlawn with an all RS-18u lash up reminiscent of what used to run out of Walkley Yard when CP had a terminal here. What really adds the dj-vu factor to the scene is the cut of former CP plug-door paper cars behind the power that are enroute to Smurfit-Stone in Portage-du-Fort. BTW, you may recall that I recently suggested that CP a.k.a. OVR may in fact operate into the City of Ottawa. Well lo and behold it/they do. I checked my topo maps and from a point near M36.5 just east of the east switch at Waba, to roughly the Arnprior station mileboard at M39.5, the Chalk River Sub passes through what used to be West Carleton Township, now the City of Ottawa. Now with this revelation comes a proposal. Since the middle point of Waba siding is virtually the geographic centre of the trackage passing through the City of Ottawa. well, are you ready for this.. here it comes, I think that the name Waba should be changed to read Ottawa West. Oh stop laughing, doesnt it make sense? I wonder what the members of the Ottawa Railway History Circle will think of this one? Geez, maybe theyll like the idea and nominate me for induction into the Canadian Railway Hall of Fame. The what you say! Yep, the Hall of Fame exists. Check it out at HYPERLINK "http://railfame.ca/" \t "_blank" http://railfame.ca/ Anyway, I dont think that Ill bring it up to the management in North Bay the next time that Im up there because theyll probably throw me off the property saying that if the name is changed theyll have to pay property taxes to the City using some wheelage-based tax rate designed by a group of irate O-Train consortium members. No-o-o-o, not a good idea! Oh well, fame is such a fleeting thing ;-) ;-) In the second image OCR 530 is west of Foresters Falls negotiating through the 5-0 curve east of the public crossing at M67.7. This is the second tightest curve on what remains of the Beachburg Sub and with the crossing hidden behind the tailend of the train, is the reason why the brush has been cleared in the foreground.
