Standard: TEKS: 112.5b5 (B) observe a simple system and describe the role of various parts such as a yo-yo and string. 112.5b7 (B) identify matter as liquids, solids, and gases. 112.5b11 (A) identify and describe the importance of earth materials including rocks, soil, water, and gases of the atmosphere in the local area and classify them as renewable, nonrenewable, or inexhaustible resources 126.3b4 (A) apply appropriate electronic search strategies in the acquisition of information including keyword and Boolean search strategies; and (B) select appropriate strategies to navigate and access information on local area networks (LANs) and wide area networks (WANs), including the Internet and intranet, for research and resource sharing. Anticipatory Set: The teacher will ask the students about their previous experiences with rain, snow, hail, sleet, and fog. The teacher will ask the students about their prior knowledge regarding clouds. The teacher will show a short video about the water cycle to the class. Instruction and Modeling The teacher will present the class with information about the four stages of the water cycle: evaporation (and transpiration) condensation precipitation collection The teacher will explain the small group assignment of gathering information and making a poster. The teacher will explain the jigsaw activity to follow the information gathering. The teacher will model the expectation of the posters by showing a poster that he/she created prior to the lesson. The teacher will write the rubric on the board. Guided Practice: The students will number off from 1 to 4 and get into small groups with others of their corresponding number. Each group will be assigned one part of the water cycle to study via library books and the internet. Once the research has been completed, each group will construct a poster about its part of the water cycle. Each poster will include a visual representation of one part of the water cycle along with at least 5 facts. The teacher will walk around and offer assistance as needed. Independent Practice: The teacher will form a second set of groups, including at least one student from each of the original groups. (It is okay to have two from the original groups, if necessary) The students will participate in a jigsaw activity by teaching their assigned part of the water cycle to their new group. If there are two members of the new group that were in the same original group, then each will teach half of the material to the new group. Closure: The students will return to their original groups. The students will present their posters and knowledge to another third grade class. Once the students return to class, the teacher will summarize what was learned and end with a class discussion.
