This course offers you the opportunity to study Physical Education at a challenging level and to build upon previous skills and performance experiences. It makes an important contribution to a balanced education and may help you to progress to further education or employment. The course aims to develop individual abilities and to enhance your personal and social development. Course Content The course consists of two units which are not taught separately, but in an integrated way. In addition there are 40 hours of flexible time. Physical Education: Performance (60 hours) This unit is designed to improve your skills and techniques in a minimum of two activities. The activities covered in this course are Basketball, Badminton, Swimming and Hockey. Physical Education: Analysis and Development of Performance (60 hours) This Unit is designed to enable candidates to gain an understanding of : the processes involved in observing and explaining performance the body of underpinning knowledge that can be used to inform training and develop performance There are four Outcomes Analyse performance in an activity Use knowledge and understanding to analyse performance Monitor a programme of work Evaluate the analysis and development process. Entry to the Course This is at the discretion of the school but you would normally be expected to have attained both of the following Standard Grade Physical Education at General/Credit level Standard Grade English preferably at Credit Level Assessment The course is assessed by a combination of internal assessment by the teacher and the external examination of the Analysis and Development of Performance Unit. Entry Requirements This is at the discretion of the school/college but you would normally be expected to have attained one of the following Standard Grade Physical Education at General level Intermediate 1 Physical Education units or course other relevant prior experience in physical education, including experience gained out with certificated courses. Assessment The course is assessed by a combination of internal assessment by the teacher and the external examination of the Analysis and Development of Performance Unit. Standard Grade This course gives pupils the opportunity to develop their potential through a 2 year course in Physical Education. The aims of the course are to enable pupils: To improve the pupils practical performance through practising and refining techniques and then developing these further within the games. To develop and improve the pupils knowledge and understanding of the relevant facts and principles through both practical and written work. To develop the pupils ability to evaluate practical performance and suggest improvements. To enhance the pupils affective development by adopting different roles, sharing their ideas, communicating decisions and responding to various types of challenge. Course Content The course aims will be delivered through the following activities: gymnastics, swimming, hockey, badminton, basketball and fitness. This is a reflection of the variety of experiences and different challenges provided by this course. Assessment The assessment for the course is made up in the following ways. Practical Performance is assessed continuously and accounts for 50% of the final mark; the remaining 50% will be assessed by an external exam at the end of the course. This exam will look at both Knowledge & Understanding 25% and Evaluating 25%. There also will be regular class tests within these two areas to monitor the pupils progress. Homework Homework is an integral and valuable feature of the course and as such all pupils will be expected to complete approximately 1/2 hour per week. Homework will centre on completing tasks and studying course notes from their various Standard Grade activity booklets. Progression From Standard Grade, pupils in S5/6 can progress with their study of physical education on to a Higher or Intermediate 2 course, dependent on the level of award achieved at Standard Grade.  0 1 P \   J V > ?
