We must be like the Bereans and test everything we hear with Scripture. We will begin our study of the Gospel of Jesus Christ, addressing repentance and water baptism, and in our next couple of studies we will talk about the free gift of God, the Holy Ghost. 1. Read 1Corinthians 15:1-4 a. According to verses 3-4, what three events make up the gospel (good news)? 1. _____________ 2. _____________ 3. _____________ 2. Read 2Thessalonians 1:7-10 a. According to verse 8, when Jesus comes again, who will He punish? Those who do not know God and those who do not obey the what? ___________________________. 3. Read Mark 16:15-16 a. What did Jesus command His disciples to do? Go and preach the what? ______________ b. According to verse 16, who will be saved? He who believes and is ________________. c. Therefore, according to verse 16, how does one obey the gospel (good news)? ___________________________________. 4. Read Ephesians 1:7 a. What redeems us to God and allows for forgiveness of our sins? _____________________. Since Christ shed His blood at His death, lets see how we get into Christ and into His death.... 5. Read Romans 6:3-7; Galatians 3:26-27 a. How does one put on Christ? ___________________. b. Since the blood of Christ redeems us to God and allows for forgiveness of our sins, and since the blood of Christ was shed at His death, according to Romans verse 3, how does one get into Christ's death? ______________. c. After we are baptized into Christ’s death, what is one to walk in? ____________________. d. Knowing this, that our old man is _________________, that the body of _____ might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin. e. For he that is _______ is freed from sin. This is not a free pass to sin. You have died out to sin and have repented of your old ways. Repentance was a turning away from doing the will of your flesh and freely giving your life over to follow the will of God. Romans 6:16 16 Know ye not, that to whom ye yield yourselves servants to obey, his servants ye are to whom ye obey; whether of sin unto death, or of obedience unto righteousness? Water baptism is symbolic of being buried, not a sprinkling or a pouring of water over your head. Baptism is when a person, who believes the gospel of Jesus Christ, is buried with Christ into His death, through water, at which point you take on the name of Jesus Christ. 6. Read Colossians 2:11-15 a. At what point does Jesus circumcise (cut away) a person's sins? ____________________ It is a good time to note that most church groups today teach that a person comes into Christ, and is circumcised by Him, by praying the Sinner’s Prayer. However, as you can see for yourself, this is not true. 7. Read John 3:3-5 a. In order for a man to be born again, he must be born of __________ and __________ to enter the Kingdom of Heaven. 8. Read Matthew 16:13-19 a. After Peter confessed Jesus as being the Christ, the Son of the Living God, what did Jesus give to Peter in verse 19? The keys of the __________________________. b. Generally speaking, what are “keys” used for? _____________________ c. Judging from John 3:5, the “keys to the kingdom” involves both _________ and __________. d. Since Jesus gave Peter the “keys of the Kingdom,” who will be the first to tell people how to specifically enter the Kingdom? _________________. Let’s see if the Bible is consistent. 9. Read Acts 2:36-41 a. When the people wanted to be saved, what did Peter, the man given the keys of the Kingdom, tell them to do to be saved? ____________________________________________. b. The word repent comes from the Greek word “metanoeo,” which means change one’s mind. A change in mind leads to a change in action. Therefore, a person who truly repents will leave the life of sin and follow the ways of God. Peter then tells the people to be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins (our debt of inherited sin at birth being paid by the blood of Jesus Christ’s death, of which we have just partaken of.) Thus (being born of water) and then the promise that you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit (being born of the Spirit). Do you see the consistency between John 3:5, Matthew 16:19 and Acts 2:38? _______ c. According to this verse, give the two reasons why a person is to be baptized? 1. _____________________________ 2. ______________________________ NEW TESTAMENT EXAMPLES OF CONVERSIONS Note: Asking Jesus to come into one’s heart to be saved is commonly taught in most churches today, the Sinner's Prayer. Is this what the Bible teaches? _______ 10. Read Acts 8:12; Acts 8:26-38; and Acts 16:25-33 a. What did you notice in all these examples of conversions? What did they do immediately upon hearing and believing the gospel? ________________________________. b. When the Spirit said unto Philip, Go near, and join thyself to this chariot. What action did Philip take? ___________ c. Did all these examples of conversions match up to what Jesus said in Mark 16:15-16? _______. 11. Read Acts 19:1-6 a. After Paul explained the purpose of John's baptism, what did these do? ___________________________. b. Therefore, does it matter what baptism we receive? _______. In Acts 2:38, it says, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. c. If a person was Not baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, should they: (A.) get baptized again in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins? (B.) omit this scripture and all references to being baptized in Jesus name and refer to Matthew 28:19? or (C.) claim that this was the way I was always taught? __________. Colossians 3:17 17 And whatsoever ye do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God and the Father by him. d. Would this verse also refer to baptism? _________. If your answer is no, please explain scripturally why it would not apply. __________________________________ 12. Read Matthew 4:3-9 a. When Jesus refuted Satan, what did He use to refute him with? ____________ The Word of God destroys the lies and half truths of Satan. In verses 6-7, Satan tried to use Scriptures against Scripture, causing Jesus to say, “Again, it is written...” or “it is ALSO written...” We must do the same. Whenever a person tries to use Scripture against Scripture, simply do what Jesus did and say, “It is also written...” then quote another passage, such as Acts 2:38 or Mark 16:16. 13. Read Acts 22:16 a. According to this verse, at what point does a person call on the name of the Lord? __________________________. Proverbs 30:11-16 11 There is a generation that curseth their father, and doth not bless their mother. 12 There is a generation that are pure in their own eyes, and yet is not washed from their filthiness. 13 There is a generation, O how lofty are their eyes! and their eyelids are lifted up. 14 There is a generation, whose teeth are as swords, and their jaw teeth as knives, to devour the poor from off the earth, and the needy from among men. 15 The horseleach hath two daughters, crying, Give, give. There are three things that are never satisfied, yea, four things say not, It is enough: 16 The grave; and the barren womb; the earth that is not filled with water; and the fire that saith not, It is enough.
