This year, IB Learning Partners will be studying the first year of the IB Standard Level curriculum. The IB Diploma Programmes Mathematics curriculum is comprised of seven topics at the Standard Level. These include algebra, functions and equations, circular functions and trigonometry, vectors, statistics and probability and calculus. The IB website states the following about the curriculum: This course caters for students who already possess knowledge of basic mathematical concepts, and who are equipped with the skills needed to apply simple mathematical techniques correctly. The majority of these students will expect to need a sound mathematical background as they prepare for future studies in subjects such as chemistry, economics, psychology and business administration. The course focuses on introducing important mathematical concepts through the development of mathematical techniques. The intention is to introduce students to these concepts in a comprehensible and coherent way, rather than insisting on mathematical rigour. Students should wherever possible apply the mathematical knowledge they have acquired to solve realistic problems set in an appropriate context. The internally assessed component, the portfolio, offers students a framework for developing independence in their mathematical learning by engaging in mathematical investigation and mathematical modelling. Students are provided with opportunities to take a considered approach to these activities and to explore different ways of approaching a problem. The portfolio also allows students to work without the time constraints of a written examination and to develop the skills they need for communicating mathematical ideas. This course does not have the depth found in the mathematics HL course. Students wishing to study subjects with a high degree of mathematical content should therefore opt for the mathematics HL course rather than a mathematics SL course. Curriculum Outline The following is an outline of the topics covered for the two-year curriculum with the teaching hours beside each topic. Nearly all of the material we are covering in this curriculum will be completely new for everyone. There is a great deal less class time for this course-5 hours in two weeks as opposed to 8 hours in the past. Therefore, material will be taught quickly, and Learning Partners must take responsibility for keeping up with daily homework assignments in order to keep up with the fast-paced and challenging work. Year 1: Topic 1: Algebra 8 teaching hours -Series and Sequences -Exponents and logarithms -Expansion of the Binomial Theorem Topic 2: Functions and Equations 24 teaching hours -Inverse and composite functions, graphing functions on a GDC -Transformations and their graphs -Reciprocal function -Quadratic function and formula, domain, range, axis of symmetry -Exponential function Topic 3: Circular Functions and Trigonometry 16 teaching hours -The circle and applications of cos, sin and tan in terms of circles -Trigonometric equations in finite intervals -Application of trigonometry in triangles Topic 4: Matrices 10 teaching hours -Arithmetic, determinants and inverses of matrices -Identity matrix and zero matrix -Solutions of systems of linear equations using inverse matrices Topic 5: Vectors 16 teaching hours -Three dimensional vectors -Scalar product of two vectors -Lines in the plane and three dimensional space -Coincident and parallel lines Year 2: Topic 6: Statistics and Probability 30 teaching hours -Concepts of discrete and continuous data -Presentation of data -Cumulative frequency and standard deviation -Outcomes of complementary, combined, independent, and mutually exclusive events -Venn diagrams and tree diagrams -Binomial and normal distributions Topic 7: Calculus 36 teaching hours -Limits, derivatives and convergence -Chain rule, product and quotient rules -Anti-differentiation with indefinite integration and boundary conditions -Indefinite and definite integrals -Kinematic problems -Graphical behavior of functions Portfolio: two components consisting of a modelling project and an investigation 10 teaching hours TOTAL 150 teaching hours Assessment Criteria There are two papers at the end of the two year program which make up 80% of your grade. Each paper is worth 40%. The first paper does not allow a calculator and is comprised of short-response and extended-response questions. The second paper requires a Graphic Display Calculator and consists of short-response and extended-response questions. Both papers are 1 hours long and are externally assessed. The remaining 20% of your grade consists of your portfolio, in which 10% goes toward the mathematical modelling and 10% goes toward the investigation. These are internally assessed and externally moderated by the IBO. We will work through one each semester and at the end of the program, the best two will be chosen to assess. This is a ten-day assignment which will be given on a Friday and due the following Monday. More details will be given on your portfolio at a later time.
