You want to place your best against their best, or (if possible) negate their best through a variety of means. Most defensive coaches do this simply by having more best players than you do; thereby at any given time, having a favorable best on best XE "Best on best" XE "best on best" situation. This is basic, My kids are better than your kids, football. For a coach without superior athletes XE "Personnel" XE "personnel" , this ideology of My kids are better than your kids, when they arent, XE "Ideology" XE "ideology" allows an offensive coordinator XE "Offensive coordinator" XE "offensive coordinator" to gash you at your weak XE "Weak" XE "weak" points repeatedly. This is especially disastrous if your weak points are the majority of your defense. Unfortunately, getting louder or staring blankly at your play sheet wont help this dilemma. The smart defensive coordinator XE "Defensive Coordinator" XE "defensive coordinator" already knows this fact, but can find little help in formulating a plan to execute XE "Execute" XE "execute" that will even or better the odds from the schemes of a professional or college team. Those high level organizations have athletes. That is the goal of this manual: to even, or at least better, the odds for lesser players and their coaches. Ability to Play in Space Most coaches have highly complicated schemes and run a variety of plays to attempt to achieve a best on best XE "Best on best" XE "best on best" situation (strength on strength XE "Strength on strength" XE "strength on strength" ). The reason these schemes work with very little efficiency is because lesser athletes have a lot problems playing in space with greater athletes. Many coaches fail due to their athletes inability to play in space, in a spaced out defense. Different schemes can facilitate or negate this as a weakness. Take for example a team full of Fred XE "Fred" Flintstone look a-likes who run 5.5 40s across the board with only three 4.8 40 guys who can halfway tackle. This team may have trouble running a 3-5 man front XE "Scheme" XE "scheme" because all of these schemes at some point need a few athletes XE "Athletes" XE "athletes" to flow to the point of attack XE "Point of attack" XE "point of attack" . Few is an understatement since most of the schemes under 3, 4, or 5 man front basically have 2-5 linebackers XE "Linebackers" XE "linebackers" and 3-5 secondarythat usually comes to 7 athletesdepending on line play and assignments. Many of us are lucky to have 3 athletes that can somewhat match up XE "Match up" XE "match up" to our opponents and tackle. So in those schemes, you may have superior large, strong XE "Strong" XE "strong" , and aggressive XE "Aggressive" XE "aggressive" linemen, but you are still vulnerable to the outside XE "Outside" XE "outside" , off tackle XE "Off tackle" XE "off tackle" , or in the air (wide or vertical). This is XE "Vertical" XE "vertical" due to lack of ability in the areas of pursuit XE "Pursuit" XE "pursuit" downhill, pursuit outside, speed-rush/pressure XE "Pressure" XE "pressure" , and ability to break to ball in secondary. The below graphic XE "Graphic" XE "graphic" demonstrates this principle. Defenses with Space Players Blackened 4-3 XE "4-3" Cover XE "Cover" 2 or 5-2 Cover 3 EMBED MSDraw.Drawing.8.2 EMBED MSDraw.Drawing.8.2 Gap-Air-Mirror XE "Gap-Air-Mirror" Youth XE "Youth" Defense EMBED MSDraw.Drawing.8.2 What are you thinking, Coach? That is correct, in the Gap-Air-Mirror XE "Gap-Air-Mirror" Youth XE "Youth" Defense XE "GAM" , the corners and man-on XE "Man-on" XE "man-on" tight end XE "TE" backers are not necessarily top-notch athletes XE "Athletes" XE "athletes" . Before you begin to think Im a quack, read on and understand. Im not saying they are horrible, just not studs XE "Studs" XE "studs" . Think about their responsibility XE "Responsibility" XE "responsibility" for a moment. They cover XE "Cover" XE "cover" their man for about 1-2 seconds and are aligned right in front of him. Is that extremely difficult? I know you must be thinking in true I get the chalk now, coach talk. Youd run a quick fade, right? That is all they are drilled to stop XE "coverage" . I cannot speak for what Coach Reed has his youth players practice against in his Gap-Air-Mirror XE "Gap-Air-Mirror" Youth Defense since the pass is much less of a threat. But with us, if we see anything more than a quick route, the heavy pressure will get to the quarterback XE "quarterback" , resulting in a sack. The best athletes XE "athletes" are the ends coming off the edge, and it is extremely hard to block XE "block" them due to every gap pressure XE "Pressure" XE "pressure" . What is great about this defense is that the ends cause a mismatch and negate many of their strengths, such as passing, sweep, etc. The alignment of the personnel also negate a lot of strength issues, such as line movement, line superiority of size, and receiver ability to get into space. There is much more to this than Im discussing now because Im only introducing the principle of lesser athletes XE "athletes" in space. I have many other defensive calls to aid in covering receivers and pressure XE "pressure" the passer even more XE "Passer" XE "passer" . Playing the Percentages As with everything in life, football follows some simple rules. To run the ball, a team must be able to block XE "Block" XE "block" and execute XE "Execute" XE "execute" to some extent. This is not a demanding task with superior athletes XE "athletes" . But to pass XE "Pass" XE "pass" the ball, a team must be able to throw, catch, and pass block. This is much more demanding of the players skills. I highly recommend that you read John T. Reed XE "Reed, John T." s book Coaching Youth XE "Youth" Football XE "Coaching Youth Football" to fully understand basic statistics XE "Statistics" XE "statistics" at different levels, and the actuality of what most coaches do on your level of play. It is very unsound to run a pass-oriented XE "4-2 Dime" XE "4-2 dime" defense against a wishbone (off-tackle XE "Off tackle" XE "off tackle" /lead XE "Cross lead" XE "cross lead" XE "lead" /dive/sweep XE "Dive" XE "dive" ) scheme XE "Scheme" XE "scheme" . In the same fashion, a traditional run defense with few zone defenders (2-3) versus empty set XE "Empty set" XE "empty set" s (spread passing XE "Passing" XE "passing" ) is very unsound with slow players XE "Personnel" XE "personnel" . Either of these mistakes will get you beat up severely. The strength on strength XE "Strength on strength" XE "strength on strength" is NOT in favor of the defense in either scenario. Nickel XE "Nickel" /Dime VS Wishbone: XE "Wishbone" Ability to double and triple teamoffense Line movement and resulting linebacker pickoffoffense Medium gains every down, and repeated 1st downsoffense Best player linebacker(s) XE "Linebackers" XE "linebackers" picked off by dbl teams and misdirectionoffense XE "Misdirection" XE "misdirection" Dime or Nickel EMBED MSDraw.Drawing.8.2 EMBED MSDraw.Drawing.8.2 2-3 deep XE "3 deep" (5-2, 4-4 XE "4-4" ) VS Empty XE "Empty" Sets (passing XE "Passing" XE "passing" ): Ability to throw quick passes to force playing in spaceoffense Ability to manipulate weak XE "Weak" XE "weak" areas with motion option XE "Option" XE "option" and/or counter runs (LB/DE mainly)offense Ability to BLOCK your rushers and avoid pressure XE "Pressure" XE "pressure" -passing XE "Passing" XE "passing" situationsoffense 5-2 XE "5-2" Cover 2 or 4-4 Cover 3 EMBED MSDraw.Drawing.8.2 EMBED MSDraw.Drawing.8.2 XE "4-4" VS Wishbone XE "Wishbone" : A better defensive answer would be to clog gaps against a team that lives off 3-4 yard gains and (if they run outside XE "Outside" XE "outside" well) negate outside runs with an outside contain man while keeping best athlete(s) and tackler(s) unblocked or on edges. Gap-Man Pressure Gap or Gap-Man Pressure Special EMBED MSDraw.Drawing.8.2 EMBED MSDraw.Drawing.8.2 VS Empty XE "Empty" Set: A better defensive answer would be to rush the passer XE "Passer" XE "passer" with every man you have continually from different angles and jam receivers (bump/man). This would more effectively handle the run by superior numbers, quick pass XE "Pass" XE "pass" by superior alignment/ technique, drop back pass by superior pressure XE "Pressure" XE "pressure" . Gap-Man Pressure Special XE "Special" EMBED MSDraw.Drawing.8.2 Dont get too caught up with the Gap and Special calls. I havent discussed them yet. Im just giving an example of defensive innovation versus, Do what the pros do, thinking. While it is easy for me to say all this, the coach with the chalk last wins. Anyone can say Well coach, what if this guy runs a 4.4 40 and I run him on a fade? To that I would reply, If that kid runs a 4.4 40, you could run ANY offense you want. I could even know your play script XE "Play script" XE "play script" and still get 100 hung on me by himnot you. And, as my current associate would rightly reply, If your aunt had balls, shed be your uncle. At some point in every scheme XE "Scheme" XE "scheme" , Xs and Os give way to Jimmies and Joes. This defense I advocate does not negate this, it only attempts to even the odds as much as possible. Youth XE "Youth" to Varsity XE "Varsity" While I love to get youth coaches views on issues, there is a point of diminishing returns where, You just cant do that on a varsity XE "Varsity" XE "varsity" level. You have to hand it to youth coaches that are worth their salt though. They know football is about the running game and simplicity of scheme first and foremost. At the youth level, there are very few plays that have a chance of success versus the high school varsity XE "Varsity" XE "varsity" level of play. At the youth level, the sweep XE "Sweep" XE "sweep" , lead XE "Lead" XE "lead" XE "Isolation" XE "isolation" , and reverse XE "Misdirection" XE "misdirection" XE "reverse" plays are what score points. From the youth to the junior high level, there is a trend of more offensive versatility, the ability to execute XE "Execute" XE "execute" more complex blocking schemes, and more passing XE "Passing" XE "passing" . From junior high to the varsity XE "Varsity" XE "varsity" level, this trend increases much, much more. Most high school teams have a quarterback XE "Quarterback" XE "quarterback" /wide receiver XE "Receiver" XE "receiver" tandem that can at least lob and catch 30-40 yards. Most high school teams possess at least 2-3 linemen who can wash your guys down, put them on skates in a double team, or trap them for over-penetrating. The issues of more passing and complex blocking schemes are paramount when looking for alternative defenses from the past (old school football) or at youth level (stop-the-run football). These two options can be labeled CONTRARIAN since they are not used or even seen by a majority of coaches, who think college and NFL XE "NFL" defensive schemes (pass XE "Pass" XE "pass" -oriented) lead XE "Lead" XE "lead" to wins in high school football. A Last Note Although most high school teams might have athletes XE "Athletes" XE "athletes" to beat you in space or move your line, there are some questions you should think about. Can they execute XE "Execute" XE "execute" that scheme XE "Scheme" XE "scheme" against a contrarian XE "Contrarian" XE "contrarian" scheme and contrarian techniques? Can the quarterback XE "Quarterback" XE "quarterback" get the ball to his receivers under heavy pressure XE "Pressure" XE "pressure" ? Can their receivers get open quickly with jamming defensive back XE "defensive back" s all over them? Can their line efficiently check blocking schemes to account for every-gap pressure? Can they get a hat on your best defenders to stop you from getting strength on strength XE "Strength on strength" XE "strength on strength" ? The answer to all of these is no, initiallytheir coaches will adjust in a predictable fashion. Ill discuss this in the later chapters. The best questions to ask are, Do I have a chance in this game without the ability to. SHOCK the opponent with an aggressive XE "aggressive" unorthodox scheme XE "scheme" and technique? Force a CHANGE in play calling or blocking scheme? XE "scheme" Force the opposing coach to actually COACH, instead of watching his athletes run around mine? You may thinking like I was when reading similar materials, contemplating, What can I do? I am starting 5 freshmen XE "Freshmen" XE "freshmen" on varsity XE "Varsity" XE "varsity" defense and I have 2-3 quick guys who might tackle someone. There is no magic pill. I make no promises of victory. But you will be giving your kids a much better chance to be successful if the opposing coach XE "Opposing coach" XE "opposing coach" has to coach, instead of manage great athletes XE "Athletes" XE "athletes" .
