Advanced Creative Writing___________________ ___________________with Publication Welcome to Advanced Creative Writing, a course for students who are thinking about a writing career. The aim of this class is to create publishable, quality prose and poetry; create a portfolio of a students most outstanding examples of each of the following: poetry, a short story, creative non-fiction, and a literary interview; along with critiquing the work of others (both as a function of revision and consideration for publication); submit prose and/or poetry to literary competitions; and publish a literary publication twice during the semester. Students in this class also have the opportunity to use publication and graphics software and run Lake Stevens new literary journal. Major Writing Assignments: ( 4 poems ( 1 short story ( 1 creative non-fiction piece ( 1 additional creative piece (genre of choice) ( Literary interview ( Reflections (process and content analysis) Letter of introduction (to accompany submissions) Submit work for publication Review submissions to The Valkyrie Participate in selling ads and fundraising Final Portfolio Publication: Based on the principles established by the instructor and current class, each student will submit work to magazines, journals, and other publications as a part of the course expectations. Also, the class will manage the new Lake Stevens literary journal by engaging in the following: critiquing the work of their peers as well as outside submissions, accepting or rejecting submissions, formatting and laying out the current publication, and securing funds (either through ad sales or some alternate means) to formally publish the final product. Publishing The Valkyrie will involve real world deadlines and financial responsibilities; failure to attend class, come to class prepared, and be ready to participate will not only place more work on the other members of the class, but will be dealt with swiftly. Also, because the nature of this class and the high expectations, I expect there to be few (if any) problems. Plagiarism Plagiarism occurs when you knowingly or unknowingly represent the works of a published author or another student as your own. Plagiarism is morally and legally wrong, and will not be tolerated in this classroom. Work containing wording or ideas stolen from published writers or the writing of classmates will result in a zero grade on the assignment, and (upon a second offence) a failing grade in the class.
