An embedded issue is the increased risk for lethal blood malignancies like acute myelogenous leukemia (AML) in these patient populations. The focus of my independent research career is to understand how chronic inflammation impairs the capacity of blood-forming hematopoietic stem cells (HSC) to maintain a healthy blood system, leading to a devastating array of leukemias and inflammatory disease-related hematological comorbidities. My goal is to use multidisciplinary, cutting-edge approaches in mouse and human settings to identify specific mechanisms triggered by inflammation that interfere with, or even promote, normal HSC function. My mission is to lead a research program that establishes a new therapeutic paradigm in which bone marrow inflammation is targeted, thereby preventing and/or delaying disease onset.
