( Introductory Lesson. Slide Presentation. Initial opportunity for students to connect with and learn about the topic. English ( Read letters written by Gold Rush miners about their experiences. Students take notes on what they learn about what the letter they read tells about life during the Gold Rush. This exercise provides opportunities for students to learn about gold rush life and culture from first person historical accounts. It is recommended that the teacher select the letters for this activity since these come unedited, directly from the Library of Congress and some of them portray stereotypes to varying degrees, and some contain profanity, while others clearly present a certain religious point of view. Letters (or portions thereof) will be chosen with each student based on learning needs and interests of each student. The following is a link to the search results for Gold Rush in the Library of Congress collection, California As I Saw It: First-Person Narratives of California's Early Years, 1849-1900.
