They are both heterozygous for body segments, antennae number, eye size, tail shape, nose color, body color, and leg number. In this activity, you will simulate the reproduction of Mr. and Mrs. Critter, and you will construct the resulting Critter offspring. You are to sort Mom and Dad Critter chromosomes using the concepts of meiosis in forming the gametes, decode the chromosomal code found on the baby. After the Critter babies are born, the siblings will be assembled together in the nursery to be analyzed. Chromosomal analysis of this unusual species has revealed that Critters have 8 pairs of chromosomes, a total of 16 chromosomes. Objective To model the way in which traits are passed on through different modes of inheritance and the affect this has on genetic variation in a population. Procedure Review the modes of inheritance for each of the genes expressed by Mr. and Mrs. Critter (Table 1). Identify Mr. and Mrs. Critters genotypes and phenotypes of each trait (Table 2). Complete a Punnett square for each gene to determine the probability of producing offspring with a specific genotype. Record the genotypic and phenotypic ratios for each Punnett square. Roll a dice to determine which of the four possible offspring is actually produced. Punnett square boxes are numbered 1 through 4; each number rolled corresponds to a numbered box in the Punnett square. Rolls resulting in a five or six do not count. Record the numbers rolled that resulted in your offspring. Record the genotype and phenotype of your F1. Construct the resulting F1. (5 points) Find a critter of the opposite sex to mate with. Record the genotype and phenotype of your partners F1. (2 points) Allow your F1 and your partners F1 to reproduce. Repeat steps 3 6 to predict the possible offspring that may result by crossing the two critters produced in the first generation. (8 points) Record the genotype and phenotype for the resulting F2 critter. (2 points) Construct the resulting F2.
