The journal ceased publication in 1941. Also in 1921 a journal written by former political convicts and exiles called Katorga i ssylka (Penal Servitude and Exile) was established. This is a publication of great chronological importance as the contents were dedicated to Russian historical documents and memoirs from the end of the 19th - beginning of 20th century. This journal was published until 1935. Krasnyi arkhiv (Red Archive) published, exclusively, archival documents from 1922-1941. Arkhiv delo (Archive Matters) published 1923-1941, on archives and the study of sources, Pechat i revolutsiia (Press and Revolution), published 1921-1930, and Novii vostok (New East), published 1922-1930, were not widely subscribed. In 1925 a new organization was formed called the Society of Historian-Marxists, which was created to unite everyone under the partys leadership, including bourgeois historians. The Society started to publish a journal on Russian and international history in 1926 called Istorik-Marksist (Historian-Marxist). When in 1937 the Society was shut down, the publication became an edition produced by the Institute of History of the USSR Academy of Sciences. With the beginning of World War II, it was determined that the existence of two historical journals was not necessary, and Istorik-Marksist merged into Istoricheskii zhurnal (Historical Journal). The final issue of Istorik-Marksist was No. 6, published in 1941. The publication of Istoricheskii zhurnal continued under the editorship of M. Yaroslavskiy, the former chief editor of Istorik-Marksist. Two members of the editorial board of Istorik-Marksist became members of the united Istoricheskii zhurnal board. In 1931 Bor'ba Klassov (Class Struggle), the first historical scientific-popular journal was published under the aegis of the Society of Historian-Marxists. It was published under this name until 1936. In 1937 the first issue of Istoricheskii zhurnal was published with two announcements: From this issue, Bor'ba Klassov will be published as Istoricheskii zhurnal a monthly popular illustrated journal on the issues of national history. With this journal a new column Teaching History in the Schools will commence. Editorial Board. Information for subscribers. Subscriptions to Borba Klassov from January 1937 will transfer to Istoricheskii zhurnal, without recalculations from a specific date. Publishing House of the Central Committee of S.P.S.U.(B.) Pravda. In addition Istoricheskii zhurnal carried the following subheading: formerly Bor'ba Klassov. Then the Institute of History of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR was put in charge of the journal. It was then transformed from a scientific popular journal into a more scientific academic publication. In 1945 the Central Committee of the S.P.S.U. (B.) passed a resolution on the work of Istoricheskii zhurnal, expressing dissatisfaction with the work of the editorial board. It was decided to entrust the Institute of History with the publication of Voprosy istorii (Issues of History) instead of Istoricheskii zhurnal. After Istoricheskii zhurnal issue No. 5 in 1945, the first issue of Voprosy istorii was published. Therefore, the official succession of Voprosy istorii starts as follows: Bor'ba Klassov, Istoricheskii zhurnal, and Voprosy istorii. However, considering that in the first years of publication, Bor'ba Klassov carried a more popular characteristic, Voprosy istorii inherited the contents and style of Istorik-Marksist. Guided by this, the current editorial board states that Voprosy istorii is the historical successor of Istorik-Marksist, Bor'ba Klassov, and Istoricheskii zhurnal. E.A. Yastrzhembskaya Deputy Director of the Russian National Historical Public Library In 1931 in connection with a letter Stalin had written to the journal Proletarskaia revolutsiia, the editors of Istorik-Marksist, Bor'ba Klassov, and Proletarskaia revolutsiia had a meeting to decide on themes of the journals, as follows: Istorik-Marksist: general history, oriented to scientific issues, Proletarskaia revolutsiia: methodically covering issues on the history of the class struggle and the history of the party, Bor'ba Klassov: popular topics on all issues.
