Through studies of grammar, usage, vocabulary, and writing, students will practice skills necessary to succeed in high school and on into college and the workplace. Students will use the writing process to refine and develop their written endeavors through such pieces as the reflective piece, editorial, short story, book review, journal entries, and on demand writing. Students will develop several skills to enhance and enable their writing including reading, speaking, listening, and observing. As an Honors course, this class is more rigorous and designed to prepare students for AP English 3; therefore students will be expected to put forth more effort mentally! Course Goal: In preparation for following endeavors, this course should examine the human condition in a variety of literature pieces and present the student with chances to explore their condition through various writing opportunities. Additionally students will receive the preparation necessary to enter into Advanced Placement English III as a junior. NOTE: Some of the literature and selections we will read may have mature themes and language as a result of the genre of Young Adult fiction. Please notify the teacher if you or your parent has any objections and an alternative assignment will be given. Student Objectives: The student will develop vocabulary and spelling skills. The student will engage in the writing process to create various writing folder pieces. The student will use grammar, language, and mechanics to enhance their writing and communicative talents. The student will explore the human condition through various literary pieces ranging in genre and historical significance. The student will determine his/her individual strengths and weaknesses in their writing and reading skills and create an action plan to develop both. The student will use various thinking techniques to interpret, analyze, evaluate, and synthesize literary pieces. Course Requirements: Students will complete all tests, quizzes, homework, and other assessments. Students will participate in class daily through verbal and written communication. Students will engage in the writing process to develop their writing folder. Students will come prepared to class daily, including necessary supplies and completed homework. Criteria Included for Evaluation and Determination of Grade: Grading Scale: 92-100 = A 91-83 = B 82-74 = C 73-65 = D 64 and below = F Each assignment is given a point value. The total number of points earned will be divided by the total number of points available. Keeping a folder of all work will ensure that each student knows where he/she stands at any given time in the course. Students will speak using positive comments only!!! Students will not be permitted to have cell phones in class. Students will not use foul language. Students will not engage in Public Displays of Affection (PDA). Students will be permitted to use the restroom FOUR (4) times per quarter. Procedures for Discipline: 1st offense Verbal warning 2nd offense Infraction Notice, parent notification 3rd offense Behavior Action Plan, parent notification, discipline referral Please be aware there will be cases when an immediate referral is necessary if a students behavior takes away from the other students, challenges the teacher, or threatens the learning environment. At which point, the administrator will determine the punishment and decide if parents need to be contacted. It is the responsibility of the student to request work that can be made up, and the request should be made upon the first day back in school. Late Work: Any work turned in after the due date will be docked a letter grade for each day it is late. Please be sure to turn in assignments on time. Work from previous quarters will not be accepted. I realize that sometimes unforeseen events do occur that can have an impact on student work. Please contact me if this is the case, I will be more than willing to accept late work for legitimate reasons such as family emergencies, sickness, etc. Restroom Usage: Use the bathroom prior to entering the class. In case of emergency, you will have four restroom passes every quarter. Use them wisely. Students will be responsible for filling out a bathroom index card (located at the front of the room). We will follow all restroom policies designated in the Bullitt Central Handbook. Path to success starts with Bring a writing utensil and paper to class every day. Be seated and started on the class opening activity as soon as the bell rings. Always label your papers with your name, date, and period in the top right hand corner. Treat our room, everyone in the room, and property of all with respect. If you are having any difficulty at all following classroom activities or instruction let us know.
