To improve sales and reach your financial goals, the President of the company has asked you to develop a new brochure about your products for use at an up-coming Element Trade Show. Your brochure must be accurate, include interesting on-topic content about each of the elements in your assigned group, and should be presented in a manner which will be both entertaining and educational for your classmates. It must include a works-cited section, and meet all of the following guidelines as well. Specifically: You will be assigned a product line (an element or Group from the Periodic Table). You will work with a partner to research the topic using the textbook, library, Internet, etc. to learn all about it. (One Period of in-class time will be provided for this activity.) Together, you and your partner will create the advertisement to promote your product by educating potential customers (your classmates) about it. The advertisement must take the form of a bi-folded or tri-folded brochure made from normal typing paper (8.5 X 11). (No other format is acceptable) Each page of the brochure (front & back) must be used in some way, and creativity is highly encouraged (graphs, pictures, tables, sources, uses and benefits of the elements, etc.). To get the most information in the brochure, use #10 font for the text, but larger, more creative fonts may be used to add style, headings, graphics, etc. Research the following types of information about your element group: Do the elements in your group have interesting commercial uses? What is their biological importance? Where are these elements found in nature? What are some of the important compounds formed from each element, and how do the properties or uses of these compounds differ from those of the pure element. What properties do the elements in your group have in common? What additional properties vary in a predictable way down the group? Once you are finished with your research, organize and present the facts in a way which will be most clear and interesting to your classmates. Write in your own words. Summarize and describe trends rather than just presenting boring lists of physical properties. Use visuals to improve communication. We will hold our own Element Trade Show during class, so we will need 6 copies of your advertisement. (If necessary, print only one copy in color to turn in for a grade; the other copies may be black-and-white.) The project will be graded on the following: Is the written information your own work, not all cut and paste text from the internet or other sources. (pass/fail) Does the brochure address the specific required topics, listed above under #4. (20 pts) Is the information presented accurately. (included in the grade for 8b) Is the information presented in a way which makes it clear and interesting to your classmates? (10 points) Does your advertisement have proper grammar, spelling and punctuation throughout? Required font and format? (5 points) Does the brochure include at least four images (or more)? Images should be selected to enhance the information in your brochure, and should not be strictly decorative in nature (though you do want the brochure to look nice.) (5 points) The gimmick in this project is to present your information in the form of a sales brochure. Does your brochure have the look and feel of a persuasive sales brochure? Be creative, and have a sense of humor. (10 pts) Your brochure must include a reference list of works cited. Your works cited must be in MLA format. You must complete research (and include citations) from at least five sources. At least one of these must be non-internet based. The library has some wonderful books on this topic. (10 points) There are also many good references and Periodic Tables on the Internet, including: HYPERLINK "http://www.acs.org" www.acs.org (Use their quickfind tool; look for Periodic Table.) Also, HYPERLINK "http://www.webelements.com" www.webelements.com is good. HYPERLINK "http://www.theodoregray.com" www.theodoregray.com has good images. You could also search for the name(s) of the element(s) with Google or some other search engine. See also my MHS SchoolWires page.
