Requirements: Students should submit an essay which should include why you feel that you should win/deserve the scholarship; future plans including college you are committed to and career field you will be entering and why you chose that school/field; Include all extracurricular activities and/or community services and/or offices held, also why you chose the activities/services and how you think they have impacted your future. Amount of Award =1 @ $1000 Paul Galko Memorial Scholarship essay required Paul Galko was a man of service. He was a volunteer firefighter, baseball coach, and mentor to many. The Paul Galko Memorial Scholarship is open to any graduating senior, male or female who like Paul is involved in community service. Requirements: Students should submit an essay which states why the individual believes they are deserving of the scholarship. The essay should include why you chose the field, and college/university you have decided. Include all past accomplishments and personal experiences that will facilitate success in your future. The essay should focus on community service that you have been involved with, as well as how you wish to continue serving the community in the future. Amount of Award = 1 @ $500 Rotary Club of Ebensburg Scholarship essay required As a service organization, The Rotary Club of Ebensburg will continue its tradition of providing a scholarship to the graduating senior who plans on attending a technical school, trade school, or college or university. This candidate must be an outstanding and deserving individual and have demonstrated his/her abilities and commitment to service through the following selection criteria: List of all community/service activities involved in during their tenure at their high school. Possess good personal character and leadership Displays cooperation, friendship, kindness and service towards his/her classmates. If possible, the student must not be receiving any other scholarship sponsored by attending high school. The Blacklick Valley scholarship committee is responsible for the selection of the recipient. Amount of Award = 1 @ 500 Paul and Genevieve Palko Memorial Scholarship essay required Paul and Genevieve Palko raised a family of nine here in the valley. Paul worked in the Blacklick Valley School District as a teacher, athletic director, and administrator while Gen was busy raising the family. Together they believed hard work, dedication to community service, faith in religion, and devotion to each other was instilled through family and education. Their children were given the opportunity of furthering their education whether by vocational certificates, associate, bachelor, or master degrees. They believed all students should have an opportunity to grow and develop themselves, as they will become leaders of the future. This scholarship is open to Blacklick Valley seniors planning to further their education at a university, college, technical or trade school. The $750 scholarship will be administered through the students first two semesters; $400 in the first semester and $350 in the second semester provided the students first semester cumulative grade point average is a minimum of 2.5 Students applying for this award should submit an essay outlining their leadership qualities either in or out of school along with any service to the community. Amount of Award = 1 @ $750 Vintondale VFW Post 5211 Making a Difference Scholarship essay required Sponsored by the Vintondale VFW Post 5211, two $500 scholarships will be awarded to students that exemplify strong, outstanding characteristics. Each student must be the kind of person that makes a difference, that defends what is right, that can stand independently, and respects themselves, as well as others. To show these characteristics, write an essay consisting of 250 words that explains how you were the saving grace to someone being bullied and how that impacted you OR if you are a survivor of bullying, explain your experience and how it changed you as a person. The finance committee of the scholarship committee is responsible for the selection of the recipient. Amount of Award = 2 @ 500 Donald Kerekes Memorial Scholarship essay required Donald Kerekes was a 1959 graduate of Nanty Glo High School. Although Don had no children of his own, he had a positive and lasting impact on his community, serving as treasurer of Vintondale Borough and Vintondale Firemans Club for many years. He had a significant impact on his family, devoting time and love to his mother, six siblings, thirteen nieces and nephews, and multiple grandnieces and grandnephews. The word that most in Nanty Glo and Vintondale who knew Don used to describe him is friend. A classmate remembered him posthumously saying He was a great dance, especially the jitterbug. The scholarship is presented to a graduating senior who has displayed cooperation, friendship, caring and assistance toward others. This scholarship is open to Blacklick Valley seniors planning to further their education at an accredited college, university, technical or trade school in Pennsylvania. Student must be involved in extracurricular activities and/or community service activities and demonstrate qualities of a well rounded student of the community Student should submit an essay of at least 500 words stating why the individual believes they are deserving of the scholarship. The essay should include why you chose the field of study, and the college/university/trade school you have decided to attend. The essay should also include a description of involvement in community service, and specifically how they made a difference in another persons life. The scholarship recipient will be determined by a non-biased judging organization that has been established by the family of Donald Kerekes. If possible, the scholarship will be awarded to a student who has not received any other Blacklick Valley sponsored scholarships. Essays will be scored based on the following criteria: originality (40 points), content (30 points), and storytelling (30 points). The scholarship is non-renewable, and it can only be used for expenses related to education. Amount of Award = 1 @ $1000 Charles & Margaret Kupchella Scholarship This scholarship shall provide support to an outstanding and deserving student who will pursue their educational goals as a full time student enrolled at Indiana University of Pennsylvania based upon the following criteria: The student must be enrolled as a full time entering freshman at IUP and demonstrate financial need. The student must have at least a 85% GPA or be ranked in the top ten percent of his/her high school graduating class. The student must demonstrate good personal character and display promise for future success. The Blacklick Valley scholarship committee is responsible for the selection of the recipient. If there is no graduating student attending IUP, no scholarship award will be given for that year and the interest income will be added to the principal of the fund. Amount of Award = 1 @ $1335 Phillip Kupchella Memorial Scholarship This scholarship shall provide support to an outstanding and deserving student who will pursue their educational goals as a full time student enrolled at Indiana University of Pennsylvania based upon the following criteria: The student must be enrolled as a full time entering freshman at IUP and demonstrate financial need. Amount of Award = 1 @ $1,400 Dino Rudolph Memorial Scholarship Mr. and Mrs. Dino Rudolph have established a scholarship in memory of their son Dino. The scholarship began with the graduating class of 2002. The scholarship is presented to a graduating senior who has displayed cooperation, friendship, and service towards his/her fellow classmates. If possible, the scholarship will be awarded to a student who has not received any other Blacklick Valley sponsored scholarships. Amount of Award = 2 @ $1,000 Paul Shandor Memorial Scholarship The Paul Shandor Memorial Scholarship is presented to a graduating senior who has perpetuated the spirit and determination that Coach Paul Shandor tried to instill in the students and athletes whose lives he touched as a teacher and coach at Blacklick Valley. Amount of Award = 2 @ $500 APC Scholarship The American Polish Citizens Club scholarship is presented to a graduating senior who is committed to continuing their education. The American Polish Club recognizes that there are many students that need financial assistance. It is their hope that this will help in some way for student to continue his or her education. Amount of Award = 2 @ $1,000 Twin Rocks VFW Auxiliary Unit Scholarship The Twin Rocks VFW Auxiliary Unit scholarship is presented to a graduating senior who is committed to continuing their education. The Twin Rocks VFW Auxiliary Unit recognizes that there are many students that need financial assistance. Waldron Memorial Scholarship The Waldron family has established a scholarship in the memory of James Frex Waldron. This scholarship is presented to an outstanding and deserving student athlete that is continuing their education. The following criteria will be used in the selection of the recipient: Student is/was a Blacklick Valley baseball/softball player with preference given to softball. Financial need of the student will be considered but is not a major factor in the selection process. Scholarship The winner of the PTO Essay Contest will receive $500 in the form of a check from the PTO. It is important to note that any received scholarship is considered a financial aid resource.
