Multiple methods are applied to the assessment of outcomes, including assessment of responses to pain and stress flares in both the field (via within-day diaries) and in the laboratory (via standardized stimuli). Arizona Institute for Mental Health Research, 7/2010-6/2012 $25,000 "Emotional Resilience in Fibromyalgia: A Pilot Study of Web-based Treatment Principal Investigator, Mary Davis, Ph.D. This pilot project is a trial of an on-line intervention to develop emotion and pain regulation skills via mindfulness meditation training for fibromyalgia patients. As Principal Investigator, my role is to provide expertise across all aspects of the investigation, including study design, assessment methods and measures, and analysis of treatment effects. NIH/NIA-R01 10% effort 10/2005-9/2010 $3,556,855 Resilience and Health in Communities and Individuals Principal Investigator: Alex Zautra, Ph.D. This interdisciplinary project is a study of the predisposing and contemporaneous predictors at both the individual and community level of resilient aging in midlife among local communities with diverse economic, age, and ethnic composition. As a Co-Investigator, I direct the psychophysiological assessment of reactivity to environmental stress, and the evaluation of physiological markers of allostatic load as indicators of physical health risk and resilience. "The Effects of Affectionate Touch Between Spouses on Mood and Cardiovascular Responses to Laboratory Stress" Principal Investigator, Mary Burleson, Ph.D. This investigation is designed to determine to what extent and how social interaction, physical affection, or both contribute to lower cardiovascular responses to subsequent laboratory stressors among married couples. As Co-Principal Investigator, I am responsible for development of the stress protocol and training procedures, and for contributing to data analyses, interpretation of findings, and dissemination of results. NIH/NIA Administrative Supplement 10% effort 11/2007-10/2009 $200,000 Resilience and Health in Communities and Individuals Principal Investigator: Alex Zautra, Ph.D. This pilot project is designed to test the utility of a brief daily intervention that promotes either increased personal control/mastery or mindful awareness in a sample of community dwelling adults with mild to moderate depression. It is a supplement to the Resilience and Health project that is funded by an R01. As a Co-Investigator, I am responsible for the development and evaluation of the emotional awareness intervention.
