Course Description: In this class students will learn to solve complex math problems using a variety of mathematical skills, collaborate with others to complete a task, and communicate effectively using the language of mathematics. Students will justify, defend and support their ideas. The following topics will be covered throughout the 6th grade year: First Quarter: Second Quarter: Diagnostic Test and Chapter 0 Chapter 5 Fractions, Decimals, and Percents Chapter 1 Multiply and Divide Decimals Chapter 3 Data Analysis Chapter 2 Multiply and Divide Fractions Chapter 6 Algebraic Expressions Chapter 4 Ratios and Rates Third Quarter: Fourth Quarter: Chapter 7 Solve Equations FCAT (dates to be announced) Chapter 8 Functions and Inequalities Chapter 10 Volume & Surface Area Chapter 9 Using Formulas in Geometry Chapter 11 Integers Common Core Statistics Materials: For this course, students will need: 3-ring binder 1 set of 3 dividers Plenty of loose leaf notebook paper Graph paper (4-5 squares per inch) Lots pencils & erasers Manual pencil sharpener Red (or bright) pen Highlighter It is very important for students to stay organized and have supplies every day. If you need help with supplies, please email or call me. CLASS WISH LIST: tissues, paper towels, notebook & graph paper, pencils, cleaning wipes, expo markers, individually wrapped candy for student reward. Text/Workbook: Florida Math Connect- Course 1- Glencoe McGraw-Hill. Each student will be assigned a textbook to keep at home. They will not need to carry it to school as I have a class set. Online Text: HYPERLINK "http://www.connected.mcgraw-hill.com" www.connected.mcgraw-hill.com In addition to the textbook, there is an on-line component available that provides access to the textbook, tutorials, and practice opportunities. I will let the students know when this feature is activated and ready for use. Website: http://mrselugo.weebly.com Absences: Good attendance is important as this is an advanced class. Students are responsible to make up all homework and class activities when absent. Refer to the planner or teacher website when available for assignments/lessons missed while absent. I recommend reviewing the material in the textbook, and if additional help is needed use the on-line tutorial available at HYPERLINK "http://www.connected.mcgraw-hill.com" www.connected.mcgraw-hill.com. Expectations: Students shall arrive prepared with all the materials necessary for class: paper, pencils, notebook, and homework assigned. They must also arrive with a positive attitude to learn. Students should also be considerate towards each other, their teacher, and school property. Students will face consequences for failure to participate in cooperative groups. Students are expected to follow proper classroom procedures that will be reviewed in class during the first weeks. General expectations include: Do what is right. Do the best you can. Treat others as you would like to be treated. Examples will be reviewed in class. All SCPS students are also required to follow policies outlined in the student code of conduct. Failure to cooperate with classroom expectations will have the following consequences at the teachers discretion (but usually following this order unless severe behavior problem): verbal warning, seat change, complete behavior reflection form, detention, parent phone call/conference, office referral. Students are responsible for their actions. Any students whose name is left by a substitute teacher for misbehavior of any type or being uncooperative will be given a detention upon the teachers return. Grading Policies: Completing homework and class work is essential for success in advanced mathematics. The Skyward system is the record keeping system used in Seminole County Public Schools. ALL students have access to this system. Parents/Guardians are strongly encouraged to sign up for a parent account in the front office as soon as possible if not already enrolled. The correct form can be found on the Rock Lake website. Important information will be sent via email using the parent email address listed in skyward. Please use the parent account to update your email info. Parents and students should use the Skyward system regularly to track student progress. Here are a few notations you may see used in the Skyward system: LATE work was turned in beyond the due date EXC assignment is excused, and does not count towards student average NTI assignment was Not Turned In (school policy requires no grade less than a 50%. If you see NTI it reflects work that would have previously received a 0%.) Grades are calculated on a weighted scale. All the grades in each category are averaged together and count towards the following percentage of the student's grade: Homework (10%): Homework is assigned daily. Unless otherwise specified, homework is due at the beginning of the next class period. Homework will be checked daily and MUST have all work shown. Students should make necessary corrections and review homework problems missed. Successful completion of homework is necessary practice for retention, perfection, and speed building needed to prepare for the test/quizzes. The assignments are given in class and will also get posted on the teacher website. Assessments (40%): Includes class work, bell work, quizzes, projects. Students should expect to take quizzes regularly. Quizzes may be announced or unannounced. Tests (50%): Chapter Tests are a major portion of the grading focus. Prior to every text there will be a review of the material that the test will cover. Students should be successful on the tests if they complete their homework on a regular basis as well as make corrections to HW and quizzes when necessary to learn from previous mistakes. Each 9-week period will end with an exam that will cover cumulative material. School policy permits student that score below a 75% on a test to have an opportunity to relearn the material and retake the test raising their score to a maximum grade of 75%. Retakes must be taken within 1 week of the date the student receives the corrected test back. Showing Your Work: In order to receive credit on assignments/tests/quizzes, students will be expected to show ALL steps when solving problems. We are building a foundation for all future mathematics classes. Students will justify, defend and support their ideas using evidence.
