Purpose: The purpose of this activity is to work as a collaborative unit to assess a given situation and then establish a decision-making process. You are challenged to work cooperatively to reach a final decision. After you have completed your selections, you must provide an argument for your choices that is based on some criteria to assess human worth that you as a group have created. Scenario: January 3rd, 2011 A small charter flight has just crashed somewhere over the Denali Mountains in northern Alaska. Of the thirty passengers aboard the flight, only twelve have survived. The pilot and co-pilots are dead and unfortunately little remains of the plane that is of any use. As the survivors sift through the wreckage they find a compass, two pocketknives, six airline blankets, a flashlight, two cigarette lighters, and five airline food packets. Given the difficulty of locating the wreckage, severe weather conditions, and the improbability of survival, recovery attempts have been limited to one helicopter air lift a day. The helicopter can hold up to four passengers at a time, so the estimated recovery will take three days. Unfortunately, temperatures plunge to ten below at night, possibly impacting overall survival. Assignment: Of the surviving passengers, whom would you designate for the first airlift? Second? Third? How would you allocate the resources among the survivors? What was the rationale for your decisions? How might Machiavellis list differ from yours?
