HooperSchool: (210) 945-1100 Cell: (252)6737Conference: 2nd 9:50-11:20amRoom: H231ahooper@judsonisd.orgTutoring: Tuesday & Thursday 4:26-5:15 COURSE DESCRIPTION: Reading offers students reading instruction to successfully navigate academic demands as well as attain life-long literacy skills. Specific instruction in word recognition, vocabulary, comprehension strategies, and fluency provides students an opportunity to read with competence, confidence, and understanding. Students learn how traditional and electronic texts are organized and how authors choose language for effect. All of these strategies are applied in instructional-level and independent-level texts that cross the content areas. COURSE GOALS AND OBJECTIVES: Reading is designed to help students gather information, think critically, make decisions, explore new areas of knowledge, and communicate in social settings. They must analyze, synthesize, and evaluate a variety of materials and relate them to their own experiences as well as those of their peers. The students work with reading strategies to help them understand complex written fiction and nonfiction materials. Students are also given explicit instruction in reading comprehension to apply what they have learned to new areas. They are grouped in class in a variety of different ways to help facilitate learning. The reading class strives to make them lifelong readers. LITERATURE: Short stories, dramas, novels, poetry, fiction, non-fiction, etc.: selected by the teacher COMPOSITION: Minimum of 3-5 paragraph compositions; in-class short essays will also be a focus of instruction. BELL RINGER/FREE CHOICE READING: In order to reestablish a love of reading the Reading department will implement what will be called Free Choice Reading. The beginning of each day will begin with all students taking 15-20 minutes read any appropriate text. This reading will be done in a non-electronic format. There will be no phones allowed during this time period. DAILY CLASS STRUCTURE: Free Choice Reading: 20-25 minutes Writing Practice or Lexia PowerUp: 20-30 minutes Class Discussion/Journal Reflection: 5-10 minutes Daily Lesson: 20-25 minutes Closing/Reflection: 5-10 minutes FOLDERS: You will need to have a colored folder with brads for this class. Folders should be brought to class every day. I will check folders periodically. Learning to take notes prepares you for college. It is your responsibility as a good student to keep an organized folder. ONLY Reading assignments, handouts, notes, etc., should be kept in your folder. RESOURCES: Classroom Library, Lexia, Selected English/Reading department novels, Supplemental websites, audio resources, educational computer programs, and videos, to be determined by the teacher GRADING POLICY: Quarter Grades Breakdown: DAILY GRADES: 60% MAJOR Assignments: 40% Semester Exams will count for 10% of the overall final grade for the semester. HOMEWORK/CLASSWORK: LATE WORK- I AM NOT INCLINED TO ACCEPT LATE WORK. I normally give class assignments and collect at the end of class. Therefore, I normally do not take late work. However, I do understand that emergency situations may prevent a student from turning in an assignment on time. In these emergency situations, late assignments will be accepted 3 days from the assignment due date or at the end of the nine weeks, whichever is sooner. When an assignment is submitted after the due date, a penalty of ten (10) points per day will be deducted from the grade. Please see page 13 of the Secondary Grading and Reporting Handbook for more information. MISSED ASSIGNMENTS ARE THE STUDENTS RESPONSIBILITY! If you have an excused absence that keeps you from either turning in an assignment or receiving instructions for an assignment, it is the students responsibility to talk to me, or ask a peer about the assignment as soon as they return. MAKE UP WORK- is designated for students who have excused absences. If you are absent and it is excused, you must speak to me about any make up work the day you return. You will have only as many days as you were out to submit the assigned work. I am available during tutoring hours to discuss assignments missed. Please see me privately to discuss your assignments. Otherwise, there will be no opportunity to make up assignments not turned in on time. According to EIAB Local, Students will not receive credit for makeup work when the absence is due to truancy, instead, students will receive a missing for the assignment. STUDENT E-MAIL All students have been provided an e-mail by the district. Please let me know if you cannot log into this e-mail so I can find a solution to the problem. I will e-mail important information if I feel it is important enough to have it in print form as well. PARENT CENTER Please make sure you have the Judson Parent Center set up so you as a student and parent can keep track of your students grades. This is my communication process with students, parents and/or guardians when it in relation to students grades. I am always available if you feel the need to check on your childs progress. The fastest way to contact me is via email: ahooper@judsonisd.org. I can also be reached through the school office at 210-945-1100, however please allow me 24 hours to return your call, as teachers do not have phones in their classrooms. Hooper Term: Fall 2019-Spring 2020 DIRECTIONS: (1) Read through this statement carefully. (2) Ask questions if there is anything you do not understand. (3) Return it to your teacher. I have heard the teacher's discussion of plagiarism, and I understand that I must use research conventions to cite and clearly mark other people's ideas and words within my paper. I understand that plagiarism is an act of intellectual dishonesty. I understand it is academically unethical and unacceptable to do any of the following acts: To submit an essay written in whole or in part by another student as if it were my own. To download an essay from the Internet, then quote or paraphrase from it, in whole or in part, without acknowledging the original source. To restate a clever phrase verbatim from another writer without acknowledging the source. To paraphrase part of another writer's work without acknowledging the source. To reproduce the substance of another writer's argument without acknowledging the source. To take work originally done for one instructor's assignment and re-submit it to another teacher. To cheat on tests or quizzes through the use of cheat sheets, hidden notes, viewing another student's paper, revealing the answers on my own paper to another student, through verbal or textual communication, sign language, or other means of storing and communicating information, including electronic devices, recording devices, cellular telephones, headsets, and portable computers. To copy another student's homework and submit the work as if it were the product of my own labor. I understand that the consequences for committing any of the previous acts of academic dishonesty can include a failing grade for the assignment or quiz with no opportunity for make-up, failure in the class as a whole, and possible removal from the course in extreme/repeat offenses. I understand that my enrollment in this course will help me develop skills necessary for college-level writing. Therefore, I will not plagiarize or cheat. I understand the academic integrity consent statement and agree to its conditions throughout the school year. Furthermore, I understand the assignment policies and agree to abide by them.
