This does not mean that all of the old methods have been discarded; rather, it is more that we are seeing new methods surfacing. The following is a list of warning signs that parents, teachers, and others should be watchful for and react appropriately when they surface as they can be a tip that the individual is being bullied.. Physical Signs Individuals clothing is torn, ripped, and/or dirty Individual reports damaged, missing, or lost personal belongings (such as books) Individual has unexplained cuts, bruises, or scratches on his/her body Individual complains of headaches, stomachaches, or other physical ailments Individual appears very tired or sleepy at school or work Changes in individuals eating patterns are visible Individual is picked on by other students or co-workers Individual is observed hanging head, hunching shoulders, or avoiding eye contact Social Signs Individual has few, if any, friends Individual withdraws from social activities Individual is socially isolated Individual has poor social skills Individual begins acting out in the classroom or workplace Emotional Signs Individual appears sad, tearful, or depressed Individual is displaying symptoms of anxiety Individual appears to have low self-esteem Individuals moods seem to swing Individual is afraid or reluctant to go to school or work Individual is fearful of riding the bus or parking the car in the parking lot at school or work Individual is afraid to walk to and from school or to and from the parking lot at school work Individual takes an unusual route to school or work to avoid peers Individual is fearful of joining social groups at school or the workplace Individual talks about running away Individual threatens violence toward self or others Performance Indicators Individual shows little interest in school, school work, workplace, or tasks Individual suddenly begins doing poorly in school or in the workplace Individuals grades or workplace satisfactory tasks decline Individual avoids certain classes or areas of the building Individual has little or no interest in extra-curricular activities or workplace projects that he/she previously enjoyed Modified from  HYPERLINK "http://www.searchinstitute.com" www.searchinstitute.com (Bullying handout) Warning Signs Indicating Possible Bullying Behavior Bullying has reached epidemic proportions. A lot of attention is placed on helping the individual who is bullied; however, it is also important to recognize those characteristics that are prevalent in those who are the perpetrators of the bullying behavior.
