PHILIPPE PETIT Since December 1, 2001, Mr.Philippe Petit has been Deputy Director General of WIPO, currently in charge of General Affairs and Administration, having previously been in charge of External Relations and Cooperation with Certain Countries in Europe and Asia. From 1998 to 2001, Mr.Petit was Ambassador, Permanent Representative of France to the United Nations Office and other International Organizations in Geneva. Holder of degrees in law and political science and a former student of the National School of Administration (ENA), Mr.Petit started his career in the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in the Legal Affairs Department, where he was in charge of Economic and European Law. Mr.Petit was First Secretary at the French Embassy in Beijing, Peoples Republic of China, from 1971 to 1973, and later became Counsellor at the Permanent Mission of France to the European Communities in Brussels, in charge of development aid. In Paris, as of 1978, he held the following positions: Counsellor for International Affairs in the Ministry of Industry, Deputy Head of the Policy Planning Staff in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and Special Assistant to the Minister for Foreign Affairs, following, in particular, legal and international organizations matters. Following his appointment as Ambassador to Mauritius in 1985, he became, in 1988, the Diplomatic Advisor to the French Prime Minister and participated, until 1991, in all significant international meetings and negotiations. He was appointed Ambassador of France to India in 1991, and held this position, at the time of the economic opening of the country, until 1996. He was then appointed Ambassador of France to Sweden, then a new member country of the European Union, prior to his arrival in Geneva as Ambassador, Permanent Representative in 1998. Mr.Petit is married to Anne-Marie Buschman-Petit. They have two children.
