Natives Instead of Common Exotics NEWSLETTER April 2008 Volume 8 Number 4 Monthly Meeting April 1, 2008 Cibolo Nature Center at 140 City Park Road, Boerne TX Presentation: "Building Attractive Garden Enclosures will be presented by Katherine (Kat) Crawford, a Landscape Designer Consultant at Blue Moon Design in Ingram, Texas with an emphasis on resource conservation. This sounds like a good opportunity for us to learn how to beat the deer in a classy and effective way. Kat says her first memories are of digging in red clay in Arkansas, being chased by razorback pigs, grandpas garden in North Texas, playing under the large fig tree, chickens, tomatoes, grapevines, roses, iris and climbing Mimosa trees. She had her first garden at age 11 in Roanoke, Texas, where the soil is sandy loam so she was able to directly sow, corn, squash, green beans, cucumbers. Kats educational background is in English Literature & Art History, which she studied at Birkbeck College at the University of London. She has had various jobs in communications and customer service. Between November 1997 and May 2007, Kat was a Landscape Designer/Project Manager, for an established design and landscape company in Ingram, Texas. She worked in a creative team environment with talented masons and carpenters. Projects included designing passive and active rainwater catchment systems, prairie restoration, use of on site resources, and special design work in outdoor sacred space. Kat is a Texas Certified Nursery Professional, Irrigation Auditor, and Citizens Wildfire Ecology Specialist. She has developed material and taught classes in Rainwater Harvesting, Use of On site Resources, Landscape Design, Waterwise Landscapes, and Edible Landscapes to local gardening clubs, Master Gardeners, Native Plant Society and Adult Community Education groups. Presidents Message Greetings, Everyone loves a fair, and there is one coming soon, right after the Plant Sale. The Outdoor Family Fair will be held Saturday, April 12, at the Cibolo Nature Center. For several years, Boerne NPSOT Chapter has participated in this event, and our goal is to make families aware of the resources available through our chapter, including NICE! Plant-of-the-Month, recommended plant lists on our website, Bigtooth Maples for Boerne, the plant sale, and monthly meetings. For fun, families can play a wildflower guessing game or plant a wildflower in the CNC garden. It is a delight to see small, inexperienced hands dig a hole with a trowel, tap a bluebonnet out of its pot, carefully pat the soil around the roots, and sprinkle water from a heavy watering can. We provide the plants, tools, and know-how, and encourage them to come back later and see if their flowers are blooming. To show that they visited our booth, they also get a bluebonnet sticker to put on their Treasure Hunt sheet. If you would enjoy helping kids and adults learn more about our native plants, please contact me at HYPERLINK "mailto:aadams@cibolo.org" aadams@cibolo.org to sign up for a 1 or 2-hour shift between 10 AM and 2 PM. And if you have a child of any age, bring them out and join the fun. See you at the Fair! Anne A note of Thanks to Tommie Ashburn for volunteering to help Vicky Sturgis with hospitality. Where would we be without volunteers to make sure we have snacks and beverages at the meetings? Hungry, thirsty and less social probably so thank both Vicky and Tommie when you see them. Chapter Activities Mostly Native Plant Sale The 18th Annual Mostly Native Plant Sale will be Saturday, April 5 from 9 AM 4 PM at the Kendall County Fair Grounds. Find native and tried-and-true hill country plants for your landscape and gardens. Meet the expert growers, and learn from informal presentations and demonstrations throughout the day. A plant sale raffle will include items for gardening and landscaping! This is one of the Chapters fund raising events, so bring your list of plants and friends and support the programs and educational activities of the Boerne NPSOT Chapter and the Cibolo Nature Center. Admission is $5 per car. Bigtooth Maples for Boerne Update By Suzanne Young Bigtooth maples should be leafing out this month. Please send a quick note to: HYPERLINK "mailto:maplesforboerne@aol.com" \o "mailto:maplesforboerne@aol.com" maplesforboerne@aol.com to let us know that your tree has leafed out. We will include this in our report to the Lende Foundation. A community project is in the planning stage in which UTSA students will use a geographic information system (GIS) to identify the exact location and generate a map of the bigtooth maples in Boerne. The Greater Boerne Chamber of Commerce and the Boerne Convention and Visitors Bureau have joined our project and are helping us promote "Bigtooth Maples for Boerne". Other sponsors for this community-wide project are the Agricultural Heritage Museum, Cibolo Nature Center, Keep Boerne Beautiful and the City Parks and Recreation Department. You can help, too. A new flyer has been designed to encourage more Boerne businesses along Main Street and the entrance corridors, especially south and north Main and Highway 46, to apply for a tree. We want travelers to realize they have found the "Lost Maples" as soon as they enter our town. If you know a Boerne business that has room for a tree, take them a flyer and an application. The flyer and application can be downloaded from our website HYPERLINK "http://www.npsot.org" \o "http://www.npsot.org/" www.npsot.org, by clicking on the maple leaf icon that will take you to the Bigtooth Maples for Boerne webpage. You can also request a flyer and application by e-mailing HYPERLINK "mailto:maplesforboerne@aol.com" maplesforboerne@aol.com. Increasing the supply of bigtooth maple trees is another one of our goals. Chuck Janzow and his wife Martha Barker have donated 350 baby trees to our chapter. Glen Sturgis will lead a team of 20 members to care for these maple trees for a few years until they are ready to be sold at one of our future fundraising events that support chapter activities and educational programs. We would like to thank everyone in our community for helping bring back the bigtooth maples. Sincerely, Suzanne Young HYPERLINK "mailto:suzanny2@aol.com" suzanny2@aol.com / 830-249-8240 NICE! "! Plant of the Month Creek Plum (Prunus rivularis) Prunus rivularis, also commonly known as hog plum and thicket plum, is a member of the rose family. It is a small 3-8 foot, deciduous, thicket-forming shrub. It is native to the Edwards Plateau and north central Texas near stream banks, wood edges and roadsides. It prefers Full sun but will tolerate some afternoon shade. Creek Plum is xeric once established, water during establishment period, and is adapted to alkaline, calcareous clay soils or limestone outcrops. This native requires little to no maintenance once established. Creek Plum is used as an ornamental screen for low-lying sites, erosion control on banks and for wildlife habitat reclamation. It is browsed by deer, so must be protected until the thicket is established. The fruit is eaten by small mammals including foxes, ring-tailed cats and by songbirds. Flowers are delicate, fragrant showy white blossoms that cover branches March-April just before or as leaves appear. The fruit, yellow with red blush to solid bright red that ripens in June; is very tart but edible. If Prunus rivularis is unavailable at your local nursery try another desirable native plum relative, such as Mexican plum. Mexican plum is a small tree that has a similar bloom and bloom period but is not prone to suckering. Both bloom at the same time as redbud. When planted together with redbud they give a resounding and dramatic welcome to Spring! Chapter Field Trip On Sunday, April 20th we will take a field trip to a very interesting area below the Medina Lake Dam on the Medina River owned by Knox Miller of San Antonio. The area has Canyon Mock Orange and Bracted Twist Flower. We will meet at the north side of the Boerne Home Depot parking lot at 9:00 AM and carpool to the land. Bring a lunch. We will try to be back between 3:30-4:00 PM. Sign up by calling Delmar Cain at 830-230-5551 or better yet email to HYPERLINK "mailto:dlc1942@gvtc.com" dlc1942@gvtc.com. There is a limit of 25. There is no charge, for this opportunity to see a very special place. Regional Activities The Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Centers Go Native U is an informal education program designed to teach adults about the use and conservation of native plants. In the spring and fall series of native plant gardening classes, students learn about the benefits of gardening with native plants in a fun and interactive environment. All classes will be held at the Wildflower Center's beautiful campus in south Austin. The April and May classes include Container Gardening with Native Plants, Floral Designs with Native Plants and Botanical Adventures with Austins Native Plants.
