It is NOT to transmit a particular value or value system, serve as therapy, change peoples values, entertain, evaluate or diagnose people, or save the world. There are three ground rules for teaching values clarification: The facilitator is a participant. All participants always have the right to pass and are under no obligation to comment during group discussions. Each individuals answer is the right answer for that person at that time. Values evolve and mature as experiences evolve and mature. Individuals are capable of arriving at values through an intelligent process of choosing, prizing, and acting. The process includes: Choosing Freely; From alternative; and After thoughtful considerations of the consequences of each alternative. Prizing Cherishing and being happy with the choice; and Willingly affirming the choice publicly. Acting Doing something with (or as a result of) the choice and Repeating this in some life pattern. Values Clarification Exercise The Queen Elizabeth III, a major ocean liner, left the coast of England two days ago. The ship is on its way to New York. There is an international passenger list and the majority of the people have just entered the dining room for lunch. All of a sudden there is a major explosion in the engine room. Life boats are released and the passengers start to board them. The ship is slowly sinking and there remains only one more lifeboat. It holds six people, but there are ten people on deck. Here is the list of ten people: African-American activist, second-year medical student Rabbi, 54 years old Swedish bio-chemist Hollywood actress-singer-dancer Arab diplomat Japanese accountant, 31 years old his wife, six months pregnant Brazilian athlete-all sports Hispanic poet, 42 years old CIA agent with interpreting skills The task for your group is to decide which six people will board the last lifeboat and which four will down with the queen Elizabeth III.
