The conference continues the tradition of four successful bi-annual conference series organized from 2001 to 2007. Previous conferences have convened in Ethiopia with collaboration of Addis Ababa University and local in 2003 and 2005. The most recent or the 4th conference convened on August 2-4, 2007 at Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo, Michigan, USA. The 2009 International Conference will convene in Ethiopia on November 12-14, 2009. Ethiopia, an African country of about 80 million, is located in Greater the Horn of Africa region that comprises of Ethiopia, Kenya, Eritrea, Sudan, Djibouti, Somalia, and Uganda. Ethiopia is the linchpin of the Greater Horn from being the most populated and culturally diverse country in this strategic area of Africa and the global economy. The Greater Horn is a bridge between Africa and the Middle East, as well as the oil fields of the Persian Gulf. It is culturally and religiously diverse region of the world with rich natural resource potential. In spite of these potential, it is one of the poorest and unstable sub-regions of the world, suffering from conflicts and violence within and among the states. The objectives of the conference are to provide a forum for research based informed dialogue on key issues of sustainable development. The Conference is inclusive and intended for scholars, researchers, development professionals, policy makers, and investors, donors, and others interested in the sustainable development issues in Ethiopia and the Horn of Africa and Africa in general. Conference Location: The 2009 Conference will convene in Ethiopia. Ethiopias capital Addis Ababa is the diplomatic capital of Africa and the home to several key international and Pan-African organizations such as the Africa Union (AU), the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA), and other UN organizations such as UNESCO and UNDP, and home to a large diplomatic community of nations around the world. The city is connected to Africa and the world with major international airlines such as Ethiopian Airlines, Kenyan Airways, KLM/Northwest, British Airways, and Lufthansa. The 2009 conference may convene in Adama City home of the primary local co-sponsors. Adama University located about 100 Km south of Addis Ababa. Adama University campus is fully wireless and equipped with modern facilities. Adama is an emerging major regional university in Ethiopia with 17,000 Students. Adama is located in the rift valley near natural and tourist attractions. Conference Objectives: The aim of the conference is to: 1. Provide a forum for constructive dialogue on policy options for sustainable development among scholars, policy makers, and civil society groups including business leaders, 2. Exchange research papers by scholars and researchers including graduate students on the various dimensions of human development, and 3. build consensus on policy options crucial for future progress toward conflict resolution, human development, peace building, economic cooperation, and democratic governance within and among states, and 4. enhance the understanding of the relationships between the Industrial Countries and Countries of the region for mutual progress, 5. Identify areas of assistance and donor engagement and asses the qualities of these foreign assistance for the region and countries in particular.
