According to Bryukhanov, "Americans are polite, but they are very independent." Alexander Bryukhanov in his essay, "Expectation vs. Reality: A Collapse of Stereotypes," states, "Americans are polite, but they are very independent." Americans often say "excuse me" for normal actions while Russians do not. Americans beg pardon from others if they feel they may disturb any person (Bryukhanov). According to Bryukhanov's essay, Americans often say "excuse me" in normal situations. In contrast with Russians, the phrase "excuse me" is usually used by Americans in many situations when they interact with people (Bryukhanov). Despite their politeness, Americans often do whatever they feel like. For example, "women put on their make up while riding on city buses" and "during a presentation the lecturer can put his feet up on the table" (Bryukhanov). On the other hand, American people do what they want. "[W]omen put on their makeup while riding on city buses, during important gatherings anyone can drink coffee or leave the room for a minute, . . ." (Bryukhanov). On the other hand, Bryukhanov gives several examples of behavior that shows Americans " feel entirely comfortable doing whatever they feel like at certain other times."
