Classes are conducted in Mandarin. Students will gain listening, speaking, reading and writing skills in standard (Mandarin) Chinese, attaining approximately the Intermediate Low level on the ACTFL proficiency scale. Specifically, students will be able to achieve the following. Listening Able to use knowledge of text structure to understand topics related to the external environment. Demonstrate understanding of the general meaning, key ideas, and some details in authentic texts. Speaking Able to use paragraph level discourse (text structure) to produce formal communications. Can initiate, participate in, and close a conversation, ask and answer questions. Reading Can read prepared material and can puzzle out pieces of some authentic material with considerable difficulty. Able to decode one or two elements from simplest connected texts dealing with basic personal and social needs. Writing Able to write short messages, postcards, and create statements within the scope of limited language experience in a culturally authentic way. Course Goals: At the end of this course, students will be able to use Mandarin language and understand Chinese culture in various settings. The students will benefit from understanding and respecting the Chinese culture. Media: Chinese input software programs are accessible online and are free to download. Students will prepare presentations and role-play in class, and are encouraged to use high technology. There are many supplemental materials to help students learn Chinese. Course assignments: Students will be expected to complete daily assignments, which will be announced in class and also made available on my web site. In addition, students will be required to complete projects and present projects using Mandarin. Short vocabulary quizzes and unit tests will be given accordingly. Learning Chinese is a cumulative process, thus students are expected to spend the appropriate time every day preparing for class. Classroom Rules: We observe all school rules. Always show respect for everyone in the class. Treat people the way you want to be treated. Raise hands to be recognized before speaking. Do your best to speak Mandarin at all times. Cell phones, iPods, PSPs, etc. The School Board of ABC USDs policy is that personal electronic devices are to remain turned off and out sight during class. If I see or hear one of these devices without using permission, it will be confiscated. Any over-the-ear headphones or earbuds in one or two ears will result in a detention for breaking classroom rules. Gum / Food / Candy and Drinks (except water bottles) are not allowed during class time. Please remember that if you need to use the restroom, please ask and then you may take the pass hanging by the door. You may not use the pass to visit other classes, wander the halls, go to the gym, use the cell phone, or go to your locker. Be sure to bring what you need to class. Wus Detention/Referral Policy: Detentions are at Mrs. Wus discretion, and are usually rare, but do not take advantage of a good situation! You can get a detention for breaking any of the rules. If detentions and parent conferences do not work top curb behavior, you may receive a referral to the counseling office. Any serious problems: fighting, name-calling, any form of cheating, and other major discipline problems will skip the procedures of the detention policy and be sent directly to the grade level advisor, with a referral. Homework: No late homework will be accepted. The only exception is after an excused absence.
