The student teaching seminar is designed to help prospective teachers become comfortable and competent members of the teaching profession by providing them with opportunities to integrate theory, pedagogical models, and the application of this knowledge to diverse classrooms within the state of New Mexico and the larger educational community. This goal is to be pursued with an ethic of caring and democracy. III. Objectives Become familiar with the New Mexico Competencies for Entry-Level Teachers which are closely tied to the UNM COEs Conceptual Framework for Professional Education. Integrate these documents into all areas of the field experience / seminar. Document observations, descriptions, reflections and evaluations of classroom practices. Begin to develop a competency-based record of sources of evidence for satisfactory performance in each of the areas in the above documents. Begin to practice and document the ways in which teachers must come to know their students well in order to use that knowledge to shape responsive curricula and teaching. Develop tools using diversity as a classroom resource to guide teaching and learning practices Explore the childrens families, and the community in which the school is embedded, as sources of strength, knowledge, wisdom and capacity to be drawn on by the classroom teacher, including the use of the learners funds of knowledge to make curricular connections and extensions. Develop strategies to learn from the work of teaching, in collaboration with peers, through close attention to childrens thinking and understanding, as evidenced in childrens language, play and works. Be introduced to the Habits of Mind (Meier) by which democratic citizens pursue understanding of complex issues, processes, and creative works. Work with individual students, small groups of students and the entire class for the purpose of practicing reflection about what students do, say, wonder and feel. Develop, teach and assess lessons with an emphasis on attention to student thinking and understanding. Follow all guidelines for student teaching outlined in the handbook and syllabus. Engage fully in class projects and discussions. Develop a healthy working relationship with children, your cooperating teacher and supervisor. Adhere to all UNM policies as outlined in handbook. Refer to the Student at Risk policy when there are problems. IV. Required Textbook / Materials HYPERLINK "http://www.ped.state.nm.us/standards"www.ped.state.nm.us/standards V. If the student does not pass the course a second time, she / he will not be able to continue with licensure in any of the Elementary Education programs at the University of New Mexico. 980 - 1,000 = A+ 800 - 850 = B+ 921 - 979 = A 821 - 879 = B 900 - 920 = A- 800 - 820 = B- Below = Failure VII Evaluations Students will be evaluated twice during each semester (Mid-Term Evaluation & Final Evaluation). In addition, the COE / TED Assessment of Professional Identity and Dispositions will be completed at the Mid-Term of the Fall Semester. UNM Supervisors will complete a Student Observation assessment each visit to the classroom. VIII Attendance Policy Attendance is required at all seminars. Arrive on time to allow classes to begin and end at their scheduled times. Attendance is a crucial professional responsibility. Thus, you should come to all classes well prepared to assume an active and thoughtful role in the scheduled activities by having read all required readings and completed all class assignments. If you are absent more than two times this semester, you can be dropped from student teaching. Talk to your Coordinator about extenuating circumstances. It is your responsibility to check in with the Instructor after the missed class for all make up work. The reporting of absences does not relieve the student of responsibility for missed assignment, exams, etc. The student is required to take the initiative in arranging to make up missed work, and it is expected that faculty will cooperate with the student in reasonable arrangements in this regard. (UNM Pathfinder) In addition to attending seminars, interns are expected to follow the school calendar. You must report school absences to your supervisor and your cooperating teacher. You will complete the Student Log to demonstrate you were in the classroom 180 hours during the fall semester. IX Accommodation Statement The University of New Mexico seeks to provide reasonable accommodations for any student in this class who has special needs because of learning disabilities or other disabilities. The University will adhere to all applicable federal, state, and local laws, regulations and guidelines with respect to providing reasonable accommodations as required to afford equal educational opportunity. It is the students responsibility to register with Student Support Services and to contact the faculty member in a timely manner to arrange for appropriate accommodations. Please let me know about any special needs as soon as possible. X Plagiarism Statement Plagiarism is the presentation as original work by a writer of ideas, words, or thoughts belonging to someone else. You must provide a reference note indicating the source of any specific words borrowed from another source. Any project containing incidents of plagiarism will receive no credit or grade. Plagiarism is a serious offense in any college course and can lead to failure in that course or expulsion from UNM. XI Accreditation Information The College of Education is an NCATE accredited institution. NCATE stands for National Counsel for Accreditation of Teacher Education (HYPERLINK "http://www.ncate.org/"http://www.ncate.org).
