They will use data to create a stem-and-leaf and box-and-whisker plot. Using these they identify measures of central tendency. Materials- Graphing calculator Data collection form Time Three 40 min. lessons The Plot Thickens Beth Bishop Stacey Tassone Stem-and-Leaf Plots and Box-and-Whisker Plots Concept Statement Using a graphing calculator, one can plot data in a box-and-whisker plot. Data can be recorded and analyzed via stem-and-leaf plots and box-and-whiskers plots. By using stem-and-leaf plots, students will find it easier to read large data sets. The students will be able to find mean, median, and mode from their data. Mean is the sum of the data divided by the number of pieces of data. Median is the middle number when the data are arranged in numerical order. Mode is the number(s) or item(s) that appear most often. Range is the difference between the greatest number and the least number in a set of data. Learning Objectives Using a supplied data collection form, student teams will record survey data. Students will be able to make a stem-and-leaf plot. Students will construct a box-and-whisker plot using a graphing calculator. Ohio Sixth Grade Proficiency Outcomes: #21 Collect data, create tables, graph #22 Read, interpret, and use tables, charts, and graphs to identify patterns and draw conclusions #23 Apply the concept of average and calculate the arithmetic mean and mode of a given set of numbers #24 Make predictions of outcomes of experiments based upon theoretical probabilities and explain actual outcomes. Project Task Student teams will perform a data collection and analysis experiment and record and evaluate their results for mean, median and mode. Teams will consist of four students. Learning Strategies Day 1 First review mean, median, mode, and range. Teacher presents a sample of the data collection form. As a class, record how many hours each student watches TV a week. The teacher records on the data collection form the hours for each student . List results in order from least to greatest. Can you tell from this list what the average is? Find the mean, median, mode, and range of the results. Make a stem-and-leaf plot on the overhead projector. Day 2 Explain to the class, that they will be working in groups to come up with a topic (ex. Number of minutes on phone a night, number of minutes on homework a night.) Brainstorm with class a topic list. Groups will select topic and survey their class, recording results on provided form. Group will find mean, median, mode, and range for their topic and then construct a stem-and-leaf plot. Day 3 Students will learn to construct a box-and-whisker plot for day ones data results using graphing calculator. Original groups will rejoin and construct a box-and-whisker plot on their graphing calculators. Enrichment (Day 4 optional) Divide class into different groups. Give each a price list from a consumer magazine for the top-rated brands of a particular product. Each group is to study the list and find and record the mean, median, mode, and range. They are to write an explanation of which of these measures of central tendency best describes the average top-rated projects. Sharing Groups will conduct an in-class survey, record and interpret data, and share results with class. Stem-and-leaf plots will be posted on a bulletin board. Assessment Type I- Standard quiz Type II- Student will explain how to construct a box-and-whisker plot on the graphing calculator. Type III- Project Statistics Folder. Each group will find the high and low temperatures for 15 U.S. cities. A different topic may be chosen, with teacher approval. They are to make a double stem-and-leaf plot. A double stem-and-leaf plot has one column of stems and two columns of leaves. One leaf set is for one category and is placed left of the stem; the other is for a second category and is to the stems right.
