Time Required: 2 -3 days 40 min periods Essential Questions: 1. Why is the Hippocratic Oath so important in the medical field? Should the oath be taken today with the advancements in Technology? Has the Hippocratic oath stood the test of time? Key Vocabulary: confidentiality, euthanasia, ethics, morals, legal responsibility, patients rightsProcedure/Instruction: Students will have 2 day lecture and PowerPoint over patients rights, ethics and legal issues related to health care. Students will then discuss what they have heard about the Hippocratic Oath. Teacher will ask students to pair up and give each pair a copy of the Hippocratic Oath as well as the Nightingale Pledge. Students will be asked to read and rewrite the Oath using modern terminology. Closure: Students will read their new oaths to the class. Teacher will present PowerPoint on is it ethical (case studies that have occurred in the past) and discuss as a class how they would handle the situation.Evaluation/Assessment: participation and apparent comprehension of the Hippocratic Oath/Nightingale PledgeDifferentiation Strategies: Partner stronger students w/weaker students. Allow students with learning disabilities more time or other approved/suggested modifications. Strongly advise all students to get tutorial help from teacher. Students who fail a test are allowed as many additional re-test attempts as needed in order to pass; (student is allowed the grade they make, even if its a 100). Students who pass a test are allowed 1 re-test attempt to try for a higher grade. Only the highest grade is kept.
