Why isnt a ringworm a worm? Is a sponge an animal? All of these questions can be answered through taxonomy, the science of naming and classifying organisms. Taxonomy arranges organisms into groups based on similarities. The most inclusive level in the taxonomic hierarchy is a kingdom with can be subdivided into phyla. The phyla can in turn be separated into smaller groups called classes. A class can be subdivided into families and a family into genuses. A genus can be split into smaller groups called species. Purpose In this webquest, you will explore the classification system currently used to sort and categorize living organisms. You will focus on the kingdom Animalia and its diverse set of members as you explore the various levels at which organisms can be classified. You will be assigned a specific organism to investigate as you explore the classification system. Part I: Use the following links to answer the questions below: HYPERLINK "http://anthro.palomar.edu/animal/animal_1.htm" \h http://anthro.palomar.edu/animal/animal_1.htm HYPERLINK "http://www.infoplease.com/ipa/A0193009.html" http://www.infoplease.com/ipa/A0193009.html Why are classification systems useful? What is Systema Naturae? Who wrote it and when? What is binomial nomenclature and what two categories are used in a binomen? What is another name for the classification system of classifying living things? What are the seven divisions in this system in order from the most specific to the most general? Part II: Use HYPERLINK "http://www.ric.edu/ptiskus/Six_Kingdoms/Index.htm%20" http://www.ric.edu/ptiskus/Six_Kingdoms/Index.htm to answer the following: Name the 6 kingdoms agreed upon by most scientists and their characteristics. KingdomCharacteristics How are species identified? Into which kingdom(s) are bacteria placed? Which kingdom could be referred to as little creatures swimming around in a drop of water? Which one of these kingdoms do not move or contain chlorophyll and therefore cannot make their own food. Which kingdom is many celled and contains chlorophyll which enable them to make their own food? Part III: Google Search A Use the search engine Google to classify a rhesus monkey. You need to classify the rhesus monkey starting with the Kingdom and ending with the species. KingdomPhylumClassOrderFamilyGenusSpeciesWhat is the scientific name of the rhesus monkey? Part IV: Google Search B Use the search engine Google to complete the following chart. Common NamePhylum NamePhylum TraitsHabitat InformationTwo Other Phyla Members Sponge Jellyfish Tapeworm Roundworm Leech Slug Beetle Starfish Mouse Part V: Conclusion Questions To which kingdom would an organism belong if it is Prokaryotic, unicellular, and has a cell wall? Photosynthetic, aquatic, unicellular? Photosynthetic, multicellular, and terrestrial? Heterotrophic, multicellular, and ingestive? Based on the binomial classification system, the mosquito, Anopheles punctulatus, is most closely related in structure to Culex pipiens Anopheles quadrimaculatus Ades aeqypti Aedes sollicitans Jellyfish, earthworms, grasshoppers, and humans are all classified in the same Kingdom Phylum Class Species Which of the classification groups would contain the most similar members? Explain your answer. How are all of the organisms observed in part IV of this activity similar? What similarities are found among segmented worms, like the leech, and flatworms, such as the tapeworm? What differences are found among these two group Name____________________________________Class___________________Date_____________ Name_________________________Class_________________________Date______ -.:;YM N Q R [ \ e f h i j k r ͻճճիգ՛իիճ՛իի՛ՕՍՇh@RHi hRHbh@RHi hRHeh@RHih@RHih@RHih@RHihRH\^Jh@RHi^JhRHi^J hRHih]eh5h]eh5>*RHiwh h6a59 h590.;Y Z b w 9 ^gd]e & Fgd]egd]egd]e=td]=^t`gd]e=t]=^t`gd]egd]e=td]=^t`gd]e=t5]=^t`gd]e$a$gd]er s w x { | ~ !
