VISITORS

With us this morning from the Salvation Army, we had Rob Anderson, Director of Nanaimo Ministries and Dawn Anderson Fundraising & promotions coordinator.

BIRTHDAYS & ANNIVERSARIES

Congratulations to Ralph & Valery Lemmon for their 40th anniversary.

PRESIDENT – BARRY SPARKES

A big thank-you to everyone for their work at the 7-10 breakfasts. It was a very busy Saturday.

A step back in time, on this day, the first Mardi Gras parade in New Orleans happened in 1837.

After 70 years of fighting and petitioning the U.S. Supreme Court gave women the right to vote in 1922.

ROTARY FOUNDATION

Many thanks to everyone, our breakfast Rotary Foundation contributions were $ 95. The draw recipient for $ 15 was Don Tamelin.

SERGEANT AT ARMS – DAVE ELGIE

Seems everyone is busy, busy. Tess and Mark are looking forward to ‘Molly’s’ 2nd dog show. Stephen announced the upcoming 50th anniversary celebration for Big Brothers Big Sisters – March 12th, 5:00 pm at the Nanaimo Curling Club. Happy $$$’s from Don T. His hockey team played 6 games over 3 days, won the tournament and surprise, surprise he was able to walk the following day. On a work note, Don is looking forward to participating in a Dalhousie retirement research project. Rachel had her first day back to work. Dave had a big thank-you to everyone who helped with the 7-10 breakfast. In the draw for $ 50 Troy did not get a joker.

CLUB BUSINESS

Our congratulations to Don Tamelin. Don was re-appointed to sit on the District Finance committee.

An update for all members, the promotional letters for sponsors, prizes, golfers were sent by email this week. With 3 months to go, there is lots of work to be done. For 2020 our major beneficiary is ‘Food Share’.

DON ANDERSON & DAWNE ANDERSON

At our invitation, Don & Dawne gave us a review of the many programmes and services provided by the Salvation Army in Nanaimo. Falling under emergency assistance there are food hampers, clothing vouchers and furniture vouchers. 2,772 food hampers were distributed in 2019. Haircuts and income tax preparation are provided by community volunteers. Rent supplements are made available as is addiction counselling. In the course of one year, the daily lunch ($1) and supper ($2) program serviced 94,500 meals. The New Hope Centre is an always full 30 bed emergency shelter for adult males. Also available on site are community laundry facilities and showers.

40% of the annual budget comes from the three thrift stores. Pick-up services is available for furniture donations. At Mostar Road, ‘metal for meals’ is collected and re-cycled in a partnership with ABC recycling. Christmas hampers are supported by the Kettle campaign.

The Salvation Army has been in our community for over 100 years. We are indeed thankful for all the good work they do.

“The Salvation Army is a Christian organization that gives hope and support to vulnerable people in 400 communities across Canada and in 131 countries. The Salvation Army exists to share the love of Jesus Christ, meet human needs and be a transforming influence in the communities of our world.”

ROTARY MINUTE – JODIE WILLIAMS

Jodie took the opportunity to tell us about Rotary Fellowships. These are groups of Rotarians, Rotarian spouses, and Rotaractors who join together to

• Share a common interest in worthwhile recreational activities (sports, hobbies, etc.)

• Further their vocational development through acquaintance with others of the same profession

• Make new friends around the world

• Explore new opportunities for service

• Have fun and enhance their experience in Rotary

Each fellowship is operated independently of RI, with its own rules, dues requirements & administrative structure. Fellowships must be international in nature with active members in at least three countries. Each fellowship elects at least three officers to oversee administration. Fellowships are expected to support its members by publishing an annual newsletter and to maintain regular communication with RI. Fellowships are neutral with respect to religion and politics.

Fellowships provide opportunities for Rotarians to make lasting friendships outside of their own club, district, or country. They contribute to the advancement of world understanding and peace and they serve as an incentive for attracting new members and retaining existing ones.

Rotary Fellowships informally began in 1928 when a group of Rotarians with an interest in Esperanto joined together. In 1947, Rotarians organized a group of boating enthusiasts, which became the Yachting Fellowship. This Fellowship now boasts the longest continuous existence.

“Fellowship is wonderful; it illuminates life’s pathway, spreads good cheer, and is worth high price.” - Paul Harris

FOUNDATION EARNS TOP CHARITY NAVIGATOR RATING

For the 12th consecutive year, The Rotary Foundation has received the highest rating — four stars — from Charity Navigator, an independent evaluator of charities in the U.S.

The Foundation earned the recognition for demonstrating both strong financial health and commitment to accountability and transparency. Only one percent of the organizations Charity Navigator evaluates have received 12 consecutive 4-star evaluations.

"Attaining a 4-star rating verifies that The Rotary Foundation exceeds industry standards and outperforms most charities in your area of work", says Michael Thatcher, president and chief executive officer of Charity Navigator. "This exceptional designation sets the Foundation apart from its peers and demonstrates to the public its trustworthiness."

The rating reflects Charity Navigator's assessment of how the Foundation uses donations, sustains its programs and services, and practices good governance and openness.

• Sometimes, someone unexpected comes into your life out of nowhere, makes your heart race, and changes you forever. We call those people cops.

• “The secret of a good sermon is to have a good beginning and a good ending, and to have the two as close together as possible.”

~ George Burns

• “Don’t worry about avoiding temptation. As you grow older, it will avoid you.”

~ Winston Churchill
