A closed herd and flock buying in bulls and rams only. ?Lower House Farm operates a high herd health status with cattle and tests sheep for scrapie and myomax genes. The ethos is, healthy and fit animals that lead to an easy low maintained style of farming. ?We will also view the new grant aided cattle handling facility. Tom is the 4th?generation farmer of the Burge family to farm in the Doone Valley. ?Their farming enterprise consists of 1,500 Romney x Highlander ewes and 500 Scotch Black face ewes within a closed flock.? Selling the majority of lambs as stores at Blackmoor Gate Market. ?In early 2018 Tom designed and made a hydraulic caged dipper making it easier for the welfare and management of the flock . The cattle enterprise consists of a 100 head of Hereford x suckler cows moving to an Aberdeen Angus x.? The bulls used at Oaremead are Charolais x and Aberdeen Angus. The suckled calves are sold at Cutcombe in the autumn.? The Angus steers are kept until around 18 months as they are used to graze moorland under a conservation scheme. ?Tom is keen to progress with a solid grassland management system that works for him. He works with a consultant from Precision Grazing and is moving to a rotational grazing system.? They are installing a cell grazing system which is ongoing.? Tom regularly soil tests and has his own faecal egg counting equipment on farm which he uses regularly for his flock management. (New members welcome)?Headwaters of the Exe- Rotational Grazing and Herbal Lays Event ( see attached poster)Monday 8th?July 1-4pm at South Haddon Farm, Skilgate, Taunton, TA4 2DR.Following on from last December’s ‘Successful approaches to grazing’?event, join us for an interactive in field discussion event, to explore different grazing strategies and herbal lays during a different season.?South Haddon Farm mob grazes a herd of 300 Ruby Red Devon and Hereford cattle using permanent pasture and herbal leys year round. A range of speakers will be on hand during the farm walk to explore:?Planning grazing for forage value and extended seasons using herbal leys and permanent pasture. Herbal lays, how they can be used and how to manage them. Sward establishment techniques: machinery & cultivations, over-sowing vs complete reseed and seed mixes. Refreshments will be provided.?Headwaters of the Exe Project Logic quad mounted weed wiperIf you are considering your options for grassland management this summer the Headwaters of the Exe project is able to lend farmers or contractors a logic quad mounted weed wiper for?FREE. The aim of providing the weed wiper is to improve grassland weed control where farmers would otherwise use a boom sprayer. This will help to prevent acid grassland herbicides from entering the river to protect drinking water supplies and river wildlife. The weed wiper can be used to control injurious weeds such as creeping thistle (permitted also under ELS and Countryside Stewardship), or for the control of soft rush (not permitted with ELS and Countryside Stewardship). Priority usage, initially, will go to farmers within the Headwaters of the Exe catchment .You will need to agree that you hold the certificates required to operate the weed wiper and that you will collect and return it from the ENPA Exford depot. Alternatively an appropriately qualified contractor can use the machine on your behalf subject to the same terms .If you want to obtain the PA1?Safe handling and application of pesticides?and PA2F?Safe application of pesticides using weed wipers?certificates required the EHFN can organise training. Since its inception this event has generated over ?23,000 for farming’s oldest and largest charity, the Royal Agricultural Benevolent Institution (R.A.B.I). Over 100 guests attended the Spring Ball and John Smith led the auction, which offered some interesting lots including a five course dinner at the Cottage Hotel in Kingsbridge. The auction amassed ?755, with a silent raffle adding ?662.Another fundraiser for R.A.B.I was the Rendells collective sale at Newton Abbot Racecourse. Organisers again rallied local farmers to have a spring clear out and sell off tools and implements that might be considered junk by some but precious to others.
