Reading Mastery Pacing Guide

Reading Mastery Pacing Guide

Teaching to Mastery

Each student is able to do all of the items in each exercise without error by the end of the lesson…100% mastery on every task.

If students consistently cannot complete one entire lesson in one period, they are probably not at mastery (assuming the lesson is being presented with fidelity).

• If a lesson is not completed, it is best to restart during the next lesson time.

Guidelines for Grade Level / Reading Mastery Level

Kindergarten should finish lesson 95 of Reading Mastery Plus 1.

First Grade should finish lesson 95 of Reading Mastery Plus 2.

• If students place below lesson 95 of RM Plus 1, schedule two 30-minute lessons, plus an extra 15-30 minutes daily to reread old stories.

Second Grade should finish Reading Mastery Plus 3.

• Schedule two 30-minute lessons, plus 15 minutes to reread previously read stories.

• Note: RM Plus 3 requires 45-50 minute lessons, 20-30 minutes of textbook and independent workbook exercises (this workbook work is critical!)

• Performance on this work indicates/informs mastery of comprehension.

Third Grade should finish Reading Mastery Plus 4.

• Those finishing RM Plus 2 in the first months of the school year should then do two lessons in RM Plus 3 per day.

• Those students who complete RM Plus 2 mid-year or later should be placed in Corrective Reading B1 and do two lessons per day to get through levels B1 and B2 b the end of the year.
