Daily Assignments and Presentations Guide
On-Line Resource for Instructor Courses:
Day 1 Presentations (Chapters 1 pages1-19 , 2, 3)
o Each student will introduce themselves to their group:
o Name
o Department
o Rank/Position or Assignment
o Years of Service
o Most memorable fire service event (calls, promotions, etc)
o Each student will give an Impromptu Speech on a randomly selected fire service topic. Students will be given 5 minutes to prepare a 5 minute speech on their topic
o Instructors will “grade” this presentation for information purposes only
o See Impromptu speech listings and place topics on index cards for students to draw topics from
o Use “Peer Review Form” for student ratings of speeches
o Each student will complete assigned Student Workbook assignment for today’s chapters before class dismissal.
o Chapter 1: Complete the Multiple Choice and Matching Questions
o Chapter 2: Complete the True/False and Fill-in Questions
o Chapter 3: Complete the Short Answer Questions
**Completion of other question types outside of the assignment is encouraged
Day 2 Homework & Preparation
o Read assigned “You are the Fire Service Instructor” sections and answer questions.
o Complete workbook assignments
▪ Review Instructor Applications section for Chapters 1, 2, 3
o Students will be presenting a brief (5-7 minute) speech on a fire service topic on Day 2.
o Topic must be a “how-to” speech—You may bring in props for this speech
▪ The “how-to” is a fireground, EMS, or other emergency related skill that may be considered to be a “trick of the trade” or shortcut, informational topic that they will be showing a recruit firefighter on their first call. Draw from your experiences to develop your speech.
➢ Students should select or be assigned their cognitive and psychomotor presentation packages for final speeches on Day 4 & 5 from ITK or locally available information. Instructor should log speech topics assigned to each student.
Day 2 Presentations (Chapters 4, 5, Chapter 6 pgs. 124-139 Chapter 9)
o Begin class with discussion of Instruction Applications assignment from previous days material.
o Each student will present their “how-to” speech to their groups
o Speech will be graded by instructor for informational purposes only using Instructor Evaluation form
o Students will also grade each other on this presentation using Peer Evaluation Form
o Presenter should complete a Self-Evaluation Form on their own presentation
o Each student will complete assigned Student Workbook assignment for today’s chapters before class dismissal.
o Chapter 4: Complete the Multiple Choice and Matching Questions
o Chapter 5: Complete the True/False
o Chapter 6: Complete the Short Answer Questions
o Chapter 9: Complete Fill-in Questions
o **Completion of other question types outside of the assignment is encouraged
Day 3 Homework & Preparation
o Identify a Hot Topic in your department or within the fire service in general
o Prepare a 7-10 minute discussion of your department / industry hot topic and present this information with the following elements
o Overview of issue
o Current strategies to resolve
o Your individual view of situation
o Continue your preparation for your illustrative lecture and demonstrative lecture
o You will use lesson plan, PowerPoint slides, quiz and skill sheets provided only, you do not need to create any additional elements for these presentations.
▪ Practice your speeches timings
• We are looking for a minimum of 15 minutes per person for each speech
• You must provide all equipment necessary for your demonstrative speech
o Read assigned “You are the Fire Service Instructor” sections and answer questions.
o Complete workbook assignments
▪ Review Instructor Applications section for Chapters 4, 5, 6
Day 3 Presentations (Chapters 7, 8, Chapter 10 pgs. 227-234,
Chapter 12 pgs. 277-287, Chapter 16)
o Begin class with discussion of Instruction Applications assignment from previous days material.
o Each student will present his or her department hot topic speeches.
o Speeches will be graded by instructor for information purposes only using Instructor Evaluation form
▪ Students will also grade each other on this presentation using Peer Evaluation Form
o Each student will complete assigned Student Workbook assignment for today’s chapters before class dismissal.
o Chapter 7: Complete the Multiple Choice and Matching Questions
o Chapter 8: Complete the True/False
o Chapter 10: Complete the Short Answer Questions
o Chapter 16: Complete Fill-in Questions

o Students should continue to review their lesson plan assignment.
o Continue preparation for your final presentations.
o Read assigned “You are the Fire Service Instructor” sections and answer questions.
o Complete workbook assignments

Day 4 Presentations
o Begin class with discussion of Instruction Applications assignment from previous days material.
o Each student will present their illustrative speech to their groups.
o This is a graded presentation using the lecture evaluation form. Scores will be recorded and students will receive written feedback on their presentation by the instructor from the Instructor Evaluation Form.
Day 5 Homework & Preparation
o Students should finish preparation for demonstrative lectures.
o Review the objectives for the final examination.
Day 5 Presentations
o Each student will present their demonstrative speech to their groups.
o This is a graded presentation using the lecture evaluation form. Scores will be recorded and students will receive written feedback on their presentation by the instructor from the Instructor Evaluation Form.
