John Newbery Medal Book Report
John Newbery was a British bookseller in the eighteenth century. The award named for him, John Newbery Medal, is given out each year by the American Library Association. The award is given to the author with the most distinguished contribution to American literature for children. The Newbery Honor Book awards go to the other authors that also deserve recognition for their contributions. The awards were first given out in 1922.
For your summer reading, pick a book that has won the John Newbery Medal or that is a Newbery Honor Book. The book should be on your reading level, that is, you can read it by yourself and understand what you are reading.
To find a book, please go to the Association for Library Service to Children website. Once at the website, select Awards, Grants, & Scholarships. Then, click on Book & Media Awards. Select Newberry Medal. Under Newberry Medal, you will be able to find a list of all the award winners.
Once you have read your book, complete the following book report:
On the COVER PAGE, write the name of the book, the author, and the year the award was given. A space is also provided for your name.
On the SETTING PAGE, describe the setting of the book. Include when and where the story took place. There may be more than one setting. DRAW in color one place that your story takes place.
On the CHARACTER PAGE, describe the main character in your story. Remember to include what the character looks like, the character's personality, and what happened to the character in the story.
On the PROBLEM AND SOLUTION PAGE, describe the problem in the story. Then, describe how the problem was solved.
On the SUMMARY PAGE, write 8 to 10 sentences summarizing the book. Remember to include the beginning, middle, and end.
On the RECOMMENDATION PAGE, tell me if you liked the book and why. Would you recommend it to your classmates? Also, tell me why you think the book won the award.
Please use complete sentences for all of your answers. After completing each page, cut the medal out and make a booklet. Staple medals at the top to keep the pages together. Projects are due by Friday, August 24th.
I hope you have a wonderful summer and enjoy reading your book. See you next year!!!
P.S. ? At the beginning of the 1st quarter, we will do a novel study of Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing by Judy Blume. I have several copies, but if your child would like their own copy, then please have it by the second week of school.
