The Georgia Department of Economic Development (GDEcD) is the state's sales and marketing arm, the lead agency for attracting new business investment, encouraging the expansion of existing industry and small businesses, addressing macro level workforce issues, locating new markets for Georgia products, attracting tourists to Georgia, and promoting the state as a destination for arts events and location for film, music and digital entertainment projects, as well as planning and mobilizing state resources for economic development.

Governor Deal launched the High Demand Career Initiative (HDCI) in January 2014. During the first two years of HDCI, the primary focus of the initiative was to engage the private sector by collecting information about their present and future workforce needs. HDCI received a clear and consistent message regarding workforce needs in Georgia: an effectively trained workforce is essential to the sustainability of Georgia businesses. In response to this message, HDCI has been divided into two tracks: one focused on developing statewide solutions through the HDCI Industry Task Forces and the other on building regional infrastructures for communication and collaboration between the public and private sectors through the HDCI Sector Partnerships.
