5th Grade Language Arts

5th Grade Language Arts Syllabus

Welcome to Mrs. Stacey’s Language Arts class! This year we will be doing a lot of vocabulary enrichment and writing. Your child will also learn essential English skills and go in-depth with the various parts of speech.

Vocabulary

Each Monday, your child will receive a list of vocabulary words. We will spend Tuesday through Friday studying the meaning of the words and using them in context when speaking and writing. Your child will also have the weekend to study the vocabulary words. Then he/she will take a test over the list on the following Monday. If school is out on Monday, vocabulary lists and tests will be given on Tuesday.

Writing

Writing is an integral part of everyday communication. This year we will be focusing on writing to convey our thoughts and ideas and to demonstrate understanding of content. Every child will have a writer’s notebook and will be expected to write in it daily Tuesday through Friday. I will also conduct Writing Workshop on Tuesdays and Fridays for the first semester. Then I may do Writing Workshop on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Fridays for the final two nine weeks, depending on need. Writing Workshop is a series of writing lessons that concentrate on various topics such as punctuation, idea development, sentence structure, narrative writing, persuasive writing, etc.

Your child will create several writing pieces this year. The first two nine weeks, students will learn about expository writing and create an informative/explanatory piece. Then we will begin working on argumentative/persuasive writing at the end of the second nine weeks. It will continue throughout the 3rd nine weeks as well. And the fourth nine weeks will be creating a personal narrative or short story.

We will also spend time developing our On-Demand Writing skills. Students will learn to read and dissect a writing situation and task. Then they will practice completing various writing tasks (letters, articles) based on specific types of writing (opinion, explanatory/informative, narrative, and persuasive).

English

Students will have English lessons on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays for the first semester. This will be our second year of implementing the English Language Arts (ELA) Kentucky Core Academic Standards (KCAS). After teaching 15 weeks of language arts last year, I realized that there were a lot of gaps in the ELA standards. Meaning that students still need to “catch up” on standards from previous grades. So not only will we work on 5th grade standards this year, but we will also visit some ELA standards from 1st through 4th grades as well.

Below is the sequence of English units for the year. Through these units and the Writing Workshops, we will cover all 5th grade Language and Writing standards.

Assessments

Formative assessments will occur on a frequent basis. I will use daily work, writing assignments, notebook entries, and observation as formative assessment. If your child brings home a paper with a grade on it in red pen or marker, then it was recorded as a grade.

Summative assessments will take place at the end of the English units. These tests will take place on Mondays. Weekly vocabulary tests are also recorded as grades in Infinite Campus.

Please check your child’s grades frequently using the Infinite Campus Parent Portal at greenup.kyschools.us If you have not created an account, you will need to contact Pam Evans in the office at 473-7213. You may call me before or after school or email me at stacey.spears@greenup.kyschools.us if you have any questions about your child’s grades.

Homework

I hope that most of our work can be completed in class. If any work that is taken for a grade is not completed during class, it will become homework. Vocabulary words need to be studied at home. Additional homework with word sorting, writing, and language arts may be assigned throughout the school year.
