Lewisville Independent School District

Frequently Asked QuestionsWhat is the LISDblendED program? Our LISDblendED program is based on an A La Carte blended learning model. This model gives our high school students “the best of both worlds”—that is, all the advantages of online learning combined with all the benefits of our traditional classrooms. With LISDblendED, students have course choice and some level of control over time, place, path and/or pace. How does the A La Carte model work?In an A La Carte (Buffet) model, school students choose from traditional face-to-face courses, blended courses, and online courses. Students may take an online or blended course as part of their school day or as supplemental outside the school day. Think of it in terms of building an individual iTunes playlist with a variety of course delivery options. What’s the difference between an online and a blended class??An online course is an educational course in which instruction and content are delivered primarily over the Internet. The students and teacher work in different locations, and most of the instructional activities take place in an online environment. Extensive communication and collaboration between a student and the teacher and among students is emphasized. All online courses provide opportunities for students to meet with the teacher for personalized instruction and collaboration. While students must follow a pacing guide, students have the flexibility to decide when and where to work. Semester and final exams are proctored on campus, and students must pass the final exam in order to be awarded course credit.A blended course is also an educational course in which instruction and content are delivered primarily over the Internet. Unlike students taking an online course, students enrolled in a blended course are required to attend class two days a week. Students will spend class time engaged in practice, collaboration, project work and assessment. Students may also meet with the teacher on “off” days for personalized instruction and collaboration. How many online or blended courses may a student take?Full-time students (scheduled for four courses) may take one blended or online course. Seniors with senior-in/senior-out (scheduled for three courses) may take one blended or one TxVSN-approved online course. Students taking supplemental online courses may take up to two courses through the LISDVirtual Learning Academy (VLA) or the Texas Virtual School Network (TxVSN).1Course fees apply for supplemental online courses. For more information about VLA and TxVSN, go to may participate in the program? All high school students have opportunities to take supplemental online courses outside the school day and in the summer. This is an option available to middle school students as well. For 2014-2015, only juniors and seniors may participate in LISDblendED program as part of the school day.Keep in mind that online and blended learning courses are not for all students. Some students learn best in a face-to-face, traditional course. LISD has transformed learning for students, and the 1:X program supports learning across a broad spectrum of delivery modalities. That said, online and blended learning may be a great fit for students who? are motivated, self-directed learners with strong time-management skills; ? prefer to learn in an online environment;?? want some control over time, place, path and/or pace;?? want more course choice;? need to make room in the schedule for band, athletics, CTE, electives, or a second world language;? want to accelerate and graduate early;?? need to recovery credit;?? need to free up afternoons to work or explore career options; and ? need to care for family members in the morning or afternoon.Where do students work when not in class? This varies by campus. Some campuses allow students to work in the cyber café, Student Union, or other open learning space when not in class. These students have Flexible Mobility and must sign a contract and secure parent and counselor approval in order to participate. Other campuses require students to work off campus when not in a seated class. What’s Flexible Mobility? Some campuses allow students to work from home AND on campus in the cyber café, Student Union, Library, or other open learning space when working in an online course or doing online coursework on an “off” day of a blended class. Parent/guardian and counselor approval are required to participate in the program. Are online and blended courses available on all campuses? ? Online courses are available on all campuses.Students taking online coursework outside the school day (supplemental) or in the summer may choose from LISD Virtual Learning Academy courses or TxVSN courses.
